Every once in a while, you get a Guided by Voices, a My Bloody Valentine, a BRAZIL, a CATCHER IN THE RYE, a fill-in-the-blank-yourself, something which can't possibly live up to the all the hype & heightened expectations which preceded it...and then it does, quite to your astonishment. For my money, Alan Moore's previous arc on MARVELMAN (oh, let's call a spade a spade, since Marvel has already begun to prime us for the eventual reissues, which will have their original name, whenever THOSE emerge), THE RED KING SYNDROME, is a superior blend of straight-up fantasy-adventure with superhero metafiction/deconstruction, but OLYMPUS truly is the final word on superheroes as we know them. Even as Moore frequently lets his prose ramble out of control (LXG:BLACK DOSSIER and PROMETHEA fans will know what I mean), he & artist John Totleben succeed in conveying both the beautiful and horrific consequences of a real world with real superheroes. Essential for any comics fan worthy of the name.Read full review
