The Lionel 1656 0-4-0 switcher with the 6403B tender is postwar classic. How many other toys from the late 40's and 1950's can be expected to work as well as they did when new with a little TLC? This particular combo is especially durable - both the engine and the tender have metal bodies. There's no fancy electronics, no computer chips - just basic electrical and mechanical analog technology that works just fine, thank you. You can still operate it on modern Lionel track, which is amazing all by itself in a age where if you don't have the latest version of something, don't expect it to keep working. It's a joy to watch in operation - it gives a sense of the mechanical marvels steam engines are, with the pistons, rods, and drivers in motion. Little engines like this have long been a staple at Lionel - this is a good example of the tradition.Read full review

I purchased the 1948 Lionel 0-4-0 1656 from EBAY and a 1663 from the 1940s with Magic Electrol from a private party. Casting and detail are the same and both run very good. Major difference is the early version 1663 does not run on Lionel Super O Track but the 1656 does. I chose the 1656 over the 1946 1665 as the 1656 has roller pickups and the 1665 has sliding shoes. Lionel made a few versions of the 0-4-0 switcher. Lionel and MTH do have newer models at with all the modern features at prices 2-3 times higher. Magic Electrol is pretty unique. - Do Google it.

A 1948 Lionel engine and tender, when it arrived I was impressed by its quality, appearance and operational characteristics--I would rate it better than what the owner advertised it for. The only downside was that the engines front coupler did not work--I have repaired these in the past and expect that I can make it operational

It is a great Lionel achievement with a ringing bell, front automatic coupler and rear lamp on tender.

Looked at several postwar 0-4-0 steam switchers and 1656 seems to be the best. I think you would be happy with this engine. I am very happy with mine!
