Lois Lowry is a gifted author, and things really turned around for her when this book was published. It represented a new level of sophistication for the writer. Her historical fiction and fantasy skills had never really been put to the test before, and this book boosted her self confidence enough that she jettisoned into a higher level of adolescent author. In this spellbinding book, Annemarie's family decides to help her friend Ellen during the German occupation of Denmark during World War II. Annemarie's family takes a great risk and houses Ellen. Soon, they must find a way to help her to safety. The book is good for fourth and fifth grade readers. It provides just enough details about the Holocaust--not too many to scare them, and enough to help the idea hit home. It's a well-written book adored by many.Read full review
