I have owned this book before. While moving, in an attempt to down size, I let my copy get away. But, discovered I missed it too much! It's one of my main kitchen references. So you will know, I love cookbooks. Although I try not to collect them, I check them out from the library, study them, and use that information to have a core of books for my own household. Now the book. Jacque and Julia teamed up to try to bring good cooking back to the household. The first chapter on appetizers is a bit daunting....they start with clams. But stay with it. The table of contents lists Soups, Eggs, Salads and Sandwiches, Potatoes and Other Accompaniments, Vegetables, Fish, Poultry, Meats, Desserts. Hmmm. Not much left? But each section has 30 pages or so of recipes, with a wide ranges of choices. And in each chapter are insets with useful tips and techniques. Therefore, within this book, you can cook literally anything. One of my favorites is Jacques's Scallop Souffle. I served this once and a guest proposed marriage! May have been the wine or the champagne, but it sure is a great souffle. Bon appetit. Enjoy this book as much as I have. I repeat: my kitchen was empty without it. ktmRead full review
This cookbook is great! It is very easy to understand. It is very basic using easily obtainable ingredients. The photos are very specific and up close. An additional fun element is side by side comments from Julia and Jacques. They each explain their techniques and their preferences for the recipe at hand. Some of it is reminiscent of sibling rivalry. Very entertaining. This is the companion book to the PBS series Julia and Jacques Cooking At Home which also is very worth your while if you enjoy cooking. Both are highly recommended.

I bought this book because I saw the rerunning of the television series in which these two wonderful cooks worked together to bring the recipes to life. This is a companion book to that 20 episode series. They have great ideas and techniques that can help anyone cook better. My favorite section is the one that offers an alternative method for how to prepare a turkey for Thanksgiving. There are many helpful photographs. There are some recipes that I will never try, but this book still makes them fun to read. If you like Julia and Jacques, you will love this book. I also recommend that you see the television series.
I bought this book because I watched the original PBS series from which the recipes were taken and am a big fan of both Julia and Jaques. The recipes aren't that difficult to prepare and a lot of it is really great comfort food. I also bought this book because it is a great remembrance of two great chefs, one an American and the other a naturalized American. As up-scale as these two are, this is mostly down home cooking from a time when Americans weren't so paranoid about watching everything from weight to cholesterol. I would highly recommend it especially when you can find a copy in such good condition from e-Bay. It is unique when it comes to cookbooks.
In the late 90’s I used to watch the show that this book was based on. It singlehandedly began my journey in the culinary world. This recipe book is only missing the war on white pepper vs black pepper and wether to cook a roux for 2 minutes or use it right away. The marginal quips, tips, and stories make you feel like Julia and Jacques are walking you through each of the recipes.
