I have an A/V room that due to space constraints is configured as a headphone only setup. The 2 A/V room PCs have their own sound cards, but the TV Tuner and blu-ray player use the J-Tech audio extractor to output audio to a single headphone. To do this, I had to get an inexpensive 4K HDMI switch to accept input from both sources, one at a time. Moreover, I just didn’t want to use the optical output on my 4K TV, because the TV’s built-in DAC wasn’t that great. One of the really useful design features of this extractor is that it has a video output port. This allows, coupled with the HDMI switch, the use of only one HDMI input to my 4K TV. Regarding the extractor’s audio quality – I think it’s very good. You don’t have all of the signal processing options that you with a high-end PC sound card or a preamp/amp or receiver – but I’m very satisfied with it. I have 2 Asus Xonar Essence STXii sound cards in 2 of my PCs, installed with Dolby Atmos for Headphones and Schiit Magni headphone amps – and the sound quality in my opinion is not out of the ballpark compared to the Asus cards. I would recommend a decent headphone amp for the audio extractor; during video playback, I like to interactively fine-tune the volume. Either an amp with a remote, or physically placing it next to you (my solution) would work. Lastly, I would recommend this product as part of a low-cost headphone alternative setup. With a front-end HDMI switch, you can set up multiple devices to use one headphone.Read full review
