While the story is compelling, when you read it, it sounds like an eight grader wrote it. As veteran, USMCR, whose unit was activated and on DET to the Army’s 140th Air Brigade, I can attest to the clash of cultures when Marines are embedded with Army units. In my experience the Army, due to it’s larger size, runs definitely from the top down. The Marines place more responsibly on our LCPL and below than the Army does on it’s SSgt’s. Part of this is due that the Marines have a much lower officer to enlisted ratio than the Army. As a consequence Marine enlisted are given more autonomy and aren’t micromanaged. For instance I have seen the Army place E6’s on details ( guarding a head to ensure that it doesn’t get nasty) that are reserved for Marines E3 and below. While I’m of course biased to the Marines, these differences in culture and doctrine often lead to friction between the 2 branches. We have different mission sets, Marines are assault troops and often, particularly in WW2, it was up to the junior ranks to take the initiative to lead and accomplish the mission due to causalities. So it’s more of each branches history and culture that leads to differences in how each operates. Good read, but he could have definitely use a coauthor to write this book.Read full review
