This book by Ina May Gaskin, author of "spiritual midwifery" is a must for all families, expecting or not. It is one of the best books to educate mothers showing how their choices during pregnancy, and labor and delivery, influence their lives. We as society are quite undereducated when it comes to child birth. The doctors word is always right and women just follow the doctors instructions blindly. With the increasing, already scary c-section rate in the USA, women should stand up and demand better care. With Ina May you can learn what better care means and how to receive it, even when your doctor doesn't seem anything wrong with his inhumane care of babies and mother during labor and delivery. It is about time women are allowed to be strengthened by their birthing experience, supported through the process rather than being rescued from it by mainly male professionals who have a very limited education on childbirth. I keep a couple of copies of this book on my shelf to give away at all times. I have seen women change their attitude about labor by reading this book and consequently having a wonderful experience rather than being at the mercy of their doctor and nurses. Definitely a book every expecting mother and father should read. Throw away the unintelligent book of "what to expect when you are expecting" and get this "Ina May's Guide to Childbirth," she knows what she is talking about as US leading midwife!Read full review
Everyone will, at sometime in their lives, either have a baby, father a baby, or know someone very close to them who will have a baby. The information in this book is very important to say the least. I just recently gave birth for the second time and this book was my bible and my handbook. I delivered a 9 lb. baby in my house, in a water birth tub, with a midwife, and my baby was breech!!! (That means my baby came out bottom first instead of the typical head first presentation.) I knew my baby was breech and I made the decision to have him at home instead of unnaturally doing it in a hospital, where they would've no doubt tried to talk me into having a risky c-section. This book not only helped me to make my decision, it gave me a lot of information to know what to do and how to do it. This book has the potential to save lives!! It also gives information on choices that you will have to make after the baby comes. Ina May Gaskin has lead a group of midwives who have successfully and safely delivered over 2,200 babies and almost all of them without medical intervention. She is the queen of the midwives and this book is pure genius!Read full review
I bought this book after hearing many good reviews about it from other moms and moms-to-be. I am pregnant, and planning a natural unmedicated birth. I recommend this book to anyone who is pregnant or who will be assisting a woman during delivery. Whether or not you plan to use anesthesia, this book will provide a lot of useful tips for how to manage labor before you're able to get an epidural, or if it wears off. It starts off with several different women's birth stories, and then Ina May discusses many aspects of pregnancy, labor and birth. She provides many references, and discusses how our bodies are made to give birth. It's practical and straightforward, and easy to read. Definitely one of the best books I've read about pregnancy/childbirth. I highly recommend it!
I really love this book. I read it before having our first baby and after DH read it, we decided to do a homebirth. Whether you are having a home or hospital birth, this book gives an amazing look at what happens in childbirth, and the things to do and not to do from real stories. I don't think anyone should go through labor without this wonderful primer! The book gets you excited about this natural process, and I am actually looking forward to labor this time around. It also helps wipe out any 1970s horror stories that your relatives may have told you about birth :) An aside- read this book, then read the medical model that hospitals give out before making a final decision on where to have your baby. You owe it to yourself and your family to know the facts on such an important event!Read full review
Ina May Gaskin is the BEST. She is the most knowledgeable on natural childbirth helping deliver thousands of babies since the 70's and draws upon her wisdom from those many hours she spent with each woman during their labors. She has VERY important tips and simple suggestions for the woman in labor and how your partner can participate. This book is a must if you are thinking about having your child naturally. Guys can benefit from reading this too, there are ideas you may get from the birth stories to assist your partner along labor in the most loving way. I also recommend getting her "Spiritual Midwifery" book. It has lots of pictures and stories as well.
