This documentary was disappointing in that it lacked a consistent direction in nature. Beethoven is by far one of the most influential persons in human history and that should make for easy entertainment. However in this work the director cannot make up his mind, telling a story one moment and then jumping to a hard core, in depth symposium where the technicalities of musical composition are discussed in such a dry and clinical fashion that it does not flow or fit with the biographical story telling. The second disc is only "how we made the film". If this were a science fiction movie that might be interesting. But we are talking about a documentary and the life story of a director no one ever heard of. This I found incredibly boring and well over done.
Most music documentaries do not discuss music, they merely give biographical info and gossip. Worse is when offer celebrities merely saying how great the subject is. (I really don't care that the band met in high school and that Justin Timberlake just loves them.) In Search of Beethoven is is a cold keg of Gatorade in the music doc desert. It takes each musical selection (chronologically) and has an expert examine it, nut and bolts. You actually LEARN something about what makes the piece a masterwork, how it resembles and differs from other music of its period. This is my favorite non-marathon music doc, hands down, better than the one on Mozart. (I've yet to see the one on Haydn.)
Director Phil Grabsky puts together this feature length look of Ludwig Van Beethoven's life and music. Many interviews from present-day musical authorities.
Informative and entertaining. A nice sampling of his works.
