Harman Kardon has been known for their pure room filling crystal clear sound for many years. If you have not had the opportunity to listen to music the way the artists intended you hear it, then you need to turn down the noise. With any Harman Kardon sound system no matter how big or small, you can count on any Harman Kardon sound system to deliver this mind blowing full rich sound that they are famous for. I can't say enough about these systems. This is my second Harman Kardon receiver that I set up in my bedroom for my surround sound TV and I couldn't be happier with the results. This system delivers pure sound excellence, just like my newer Harman Kardon system in my den. Nobody knows sound like Harman Kardon knows sound!

Nice receiver for those on a budget looking for older/used receiver. Supports newer functions (DTS NEO 6, Dolby Digital EX) yet generally is sold pretty cheap because it is a few years old. I would say the sound quality is a bit better than my Onkyo TX-SR500, which is also an entry level model (older though). I would bet that this model compares favorably to any of the Onkyo TX-SR50_ models. Don't be fooled by low wattage numbers. Harman Kardon uses RMS values to give true indications of wattage. The peak is probably at least twice or 3 times the RMS. Also, anyone using speakers that have 1w/1m sensitivity of at least 85db could experience a steady output of 100db on each channel. This receiver is powerful, despite the seemingly low wattage ratings. Please note, I have not used the HDMI capabilities because my TV has plenty of HDMI ports for me. I have heard that HDMI functionality is limited on this model. My complaint is that setup is only through the OSD, so you can't adjust many settings without an original remote or expensive Logitech harmony (which *might* have the OSD button programmable). My Onkyo lets me make all changes through the receiver alone without a monitor. Overall, this thing is great for the price. You could do better but you have to be willing to spend much more.Read full review
I recently purchased the Harman-Kardon AVR-146 on Ebay for a friend. The weekend it arrived, he was out of town, but he insisted that I test the amplifier anyway. Man, what a surprise for a 30 watt amp! My old Radio Shack Minimus 7 bookshelf speakers suddenly came alive. I had no idea; these small bookshelf speakers could sound so good. The awesome sound this amp produces totally engulfs the room with a soothing ambience. The clarity is mind boggling, especially if you own a pair of 3-way mains. It even performed better than my Kenwood VR-6060 THX amp; and it’s rated at 100 watts per channel. Unbelievable! I was so pleased the Harman-Kardon, that I bought an AVR-240 for my bedroom. Anyway, outside of the sound, here’s what I really liked about the AVR-146: 1. HDMI switching. (although I don’t need it) 2. Lot’s of true power wattage wise. (not overrated like most amps) 3. Mid-range & treble clarity & seperation. (very life-like sound) 4. Lot’s of sound modes. (Dolby, DTS, Logic 7, Stereo, etc.) 5. Many analog & digital in/outputs.(Optical, digital coaxial, NEO 6, etc.) 6. Ipod bridging capabilities. (Must buy separate docking stand) 7. The blue light accents looks fantastic at night & it has a really modern look. 8. The remote’s nice and simple to use. 9. The On-Screen Display is nice. It made my initial setup painless. 10. Harman-Kardon quality! This amp is built like a tank, but not as heavy. So far no dislikes. Don’t be fooled by the listed wattage of any HK amp. The 146 outputs only 30 watts per channel, but I promise you the sound is loud, tight, and crystal clear. There’s several AVR-146’s on You Tube in action. So, pull up a video and see for yourself. Yes, I’m sold on Harman-Kardon. I plan to replace my Kenwood THX with a HK AVR-7300 when the prices go down just a little more. I’ll let you know how the AVR-240 performs when it arrives. So look for my review. Happy bidding!Read full review
The AVR-146 is a decent lower budget 30W/ch AVR with many tech features lagging behind current standards (i.e. HDMI pass through only). However, I bought it to leverage the Logic 7 2-Channel enhancement circuitry and the amp is plenty powerful enough for that duty. In that limited capacity, it excels and is doing a fine job. As a bonus the styling matches the HK 3485, 120W/ch, stereo receiver doing the heavy lifting in the system.
