Repressed Catholic NYPD detective Tony Lo Bianco plunges himself into a series of bizarre, supernatural murders involving a rooftop sniper, a man who murdered his own family, and a cop going on a shooting spree at a parade. The premise of deranged fatih, alien insemination combines with Larry Cohen's genre-blending of the cop movie and the supernatural thriller succeeded under the film's very tight budget. For example, the St. Patrick's Day sequence was filmed before financing was secured. Co-starring Sandy Dennis as Lo Bianco's ex-wife, Sylvia Sidney as his mother, Richard Lynch as the demonic messiah, and Andy Kauamn (in his first role in a film), as the St. Patty's Day cop. The Blue Underground DVD contains a commentary from Cohen with William Lustig along with trailers and TV spots.
I don't know if this movie is a cultural classic, but if not, it should be. How to mix God and aliens in one hidden gem. Worth seeing!
