Ford has failed on the design of this crankshaft sprocket/gear for the timing belt. Common failure mode(others report same finding on internet) is that the forward/front guide plate separates from the sprocket/gear which then lets the timing belt tear up the inside of the covers. It does make annoying noises so there is sufficient warning that immediate attention is needed. There are no aftermarket replacements available so you have no choice but to buy the Ford part at this time. On mine, the spot welds holding the plate to the sprocket were all good and the plate fatigued around each spot weld until it broke loose. More spot welds or, even better, having the plate clamped under the crankshaft pulley, might solve the problem. I ended up filling the gap under the guide plates with Loctite 290 in order to limit flexing of the plates on the new sprocket I installed. I hope that gets me to the 150k mile timing belt replacement point on this one instead of only 100k miles. Nevertheless, this sprocket should be replaced when doing the timing belt due to the inadequate design of the guide plate attachment.Read full review
