I bought this to erase 8mm video tapes. Although I have given the product good ratings above, they come with caveats. I have quite a few tapes to erase, and I thought this might be an efficient way to do so. Actually, it isn't. The unit can only be operated for about 60 seconds before it overheats and shuts off. This was known before I bought it. That said, I thought perhaps one 8mm video tape could be thoroughly erased in that time. Unfortunately, those tapes have a high magnetic persistence and it takes several attempts to fully erase them. If they are a Hi-8 metal type tape, I have yet to be able to fully erase one of those. Argh! Standard non-Hi-8 tapes can be erased though. So, buyer beware.. I will still use this to eventually erase all my 8mm standard tapes.

Works fine as long as you are not erasing more than 5 or 6 cassettes. The electromagnet inside gets warm after a few minutes use causing a thermal switch inside shuts it off leaving you waiting until it cools down and resets.
