When two-time Oscar winner Robert De Niro (Jimmy Conway) reunited with Martin Scorsese, a skillful and respected director of 'GoodFellas' the result was the most powerful film of the year. This epic crime drama explores the life of organized crime with gritty, kinetic adaptation of Nicolas Pileggi's best selling Wiseguy, the true-life account of rise from small-time thug to mobster and FBI informant Henry Hill (Ray Liotta). It reveals, in unstinting detail, the mob's amoral savagery while at the same time adopting an episodic structure that allows concentration on specifics of characters. 'GoodFellas' was rewarded with six Academy Award nominations including Best Picture.

A Martin Scorsese film - ENOUGH SAID! This is a real-life Sopranos, or Godfather style film. It is based on a true story. The actors, Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), Jimmy Conway (Robert De Niro), Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci), "Big Pauli", (Paul Sorvino) are all real people. This is a family portrait of a Mafia crew. Henry Hill is growing up in a Brooklyn neighborhood in the 1950's. His admiration goes out to the wiseguys that are all around. They have money, clothes, nice cars, and everything that he doesn't have. He starts hanging around and eventually becomes a runner and errand boy for the gangsters. At fourteen he is making more than his dad who eventually kicked him out. He grew up in the "life" and was trusted and respected by the other wiseguys. At 15 he meets Tommy DeVito and they become best friends, selling cartons of stolen cigarettes, and stealing. Henry makes his bones when he gets busted by the cops, but keeps his mouth shut. He wouldn't say anything or give anyone up. He is recognized by the boss, "Big Paulie Castellano", as a stand-up guy and from this time on, is a trusted insider. Henry teams up with Jimmy Conway (De Niro) and Tommy, and they become a first class hijack crew, stealing everything; suits, furs, cars, cigarettes, cigars, lobsters, etc. Their biggest heist was from the Air France security room at LaGuardia Airport, where they stole more than $1M cash over the Labor Day weekend holiday in 1966. Eventually Henry got caught and went to prison. He got hooked on drugs while there and never really got straight afterwards. His drug use and numerous affairs stresses his marriage, and his relationship with his adoptive "Family". Afraid that he has become too much of a liability to his family, and facing numerous charges under a RICOH case, Henry decides to turn informant. He testified against many of the wiseguys on the inside and many people went to prison for a lot of years. Henry Hill entered the Witness Relocation Program. This is a long movie, but it is a riveting view from the inside of a crime family. The callous actions, and coldblooded murders committed by Jimmy Canway and Tommy DeVito are shown. These people were out of control. This movie has a great soundtrack of 1950's, 60's, and 1970's pop music. All of the performances in this movie are top-notch! You will watch this film over and over.Read full review
One Of "THE BEST" For Its Genre!! GOODFELLAS Is A 10!
When Martin Scorsese, one of the world's most skillful and respected directors, reunited with two-time Oscar-winner Robert De Niro in GoodFellas, the result was one of the most powerful films of the year. Based on the true-life best seller Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi and backed by a dynamic pop/rock oldies soundtrack, critics and filmgoers alike declared GoodFellas great. It was named 1990's best film by the New York, Los Angeles and National Society of Film Critics. And it earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Robert De Niro received wide recognition for his performance as veteran criminal Jimmy "The Gent" Conway. And as the volatile Tommy DeVito, Joe Pesci walked off with the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Academy Award nominee Lorraine Bracco, Ray Liotta and Paul Sorvino also turned in electrifying performances. You have to see it to believe it - then watch it again. GoodFellas explores the criminal life like no other movie. One of the BEST for it's genre!!!Read full review
Goodfellas is a classic gangster flick, and a must have for any dvd collection. It features Joe Pesci, Ray Liota, and robert Deniro. It is directed by martin Scorcese. Goodfellas performed well at the box office, grossing $46.8 million domestically, well above its $25 million budget; it received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards but only won one for Pesci in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role category. Scorsese's film won five awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts and was named best film of the year by the New York Film Critics Circle, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and the National Society of Film Critics. Goodfellas is often considered one of the greatest films ever, both in the genre of crime and in general and was deemed "culturally significant" and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the United States Library of Congress.
In closing, I would say if you haven't seen this movie, it is a must watch. Hope my review was helpfull, enjoy!Read full review
This is not like the typical crime movie. The criminals and gangsters in here are not superheroes like many other movies in this genre make them to be. These people are down to earth who dont know any other way to live other than cut the corners and take short cuts. The characters in Goodfellas are not good fellas at all; they only look at their own benefits, and care nothing about others. The much declared love and care for one another in the group, these good wills are only evident during good times. When things go sour, everyone looks after their own behinds and nobody else's. Wifes and kids dont mean anything to them, they are only for cover-ups and convenience purposes. Partners? Good if they dont screw you up. And if they do? Whack them, only dead man can be trusted. And if you are going to get whacked? Volunteer for the police's witness protection program and screw your ex-mates. The gangster world is nothing romantic and honorable, and everything about business and self-interest.
This movie is so realistic, there is no climax. Everything just happens. The characters dont have much conscience and moral awareness, and it is not the movie's aim to judge the characters. The story lets everything goes on a fixed flow, and without a breakthrough from anyone in the film, the latter part becomes stagnant. By being what it is, however, Goodfellas stands out as a good portrait of the life of a gangster.Read full review
For a fascinating look at the criminal mindset, Goodfellas is an absolute must.
One of the great mob movies This film tells the story of Irish/Italian mobster Henry Hill; With Ray Liotta narrating his own life in crime in a flashback as real life criminal Henry Hill, Martin Scorsese offers us one fascinating glimpse of the criminal life in the Eisenhower to Reagan era.
Starting with the 1950's, we follow Henry Hill from a teen who tries to realise his dream of `always wanting to be a gangster'. He goes from running errands for Paulie Cicero to become a trusted man within his organisation. Working with James Conway and Tommy De Vito, Henry navigates his violent lifestyle where death is never more than a few steps away.
