Not a normal, kids come of age while misbehaving movie, this one is an example of where Aussie approaches to showing and dealing with an issue are quite at odds with European, US, or Canadian approaches. The writing is walking a careful line between exploitation and exploration, and manages to stay on the exploration side, and it really should not be "something to worry about" if teens want to see it without adults-- today's teens are smarter and have access to more of the world, via the internet and other means, and will not be quite as taken aback by what happens as they will by the way people acted back then. As a point that may interest the "serious cinephile" the cast should be considered. Where else could you expect to see Noah Taylor, Thandie Newton, Nicole Kidman, Kym Wilson, and Naomi Watts all in the same movie? .Read full review
Flirting is a simple love story movie set in a time where bi-racial couples weren't exactly welcomed. Daring late night missions to woo one another and the development of love for two people who had nothing else to look forward to, this movie is great! Not too sappy, but just sweet enough to make you coo like a studio audience. Not to mention British accents are entertaining.
I bought this movie because I am a fan of Australian Cinema in general, and Thandie Newton in particular. The movie did not disappoint. An excellent cast highlighted a thoughtful movie about coming of age in 1965 Australia. I think that the film is remarkable in the way it treats social ostracism, inter-racial attraction and any number of other factors in such a mature, sensitive way....Another great Australian Film to add to the list...
Great movie. Couldn't find anywhere else.
