I have been in the Marines in the Gulf War among other un-named events and actions around the world. I have fought with depression, anger, guilt, and other issues that would take to long to list. The military teaches you how to be a killing machine, feel no emotions, block pain, and keep going. They do not teach you how to "transition" into civilion life after combat. The transion class is about a 4 hour class and was not manditory! Now I have been diagnosed with Post Tramatic Stress Disorder, and am (finally after 16 years of trying) in classes to deal with all of this. There is so much of this book that goes hand in hand with the courses I am taking. If I was to take the courses without the book, I feel that I would not fair as well. Per Doctors orders, I have been slowly decreecing my meds and also seeing a councler who sugested that I writh all negitive thoughts in a notebook and then use parts of the book to analize the root of the problem, and it really works! I had my doubts at first, as most probablr would. Just buy the book or borrow a copy and see for yourself. If you use it on your own, in a group, or with a doctor, you WILL see positive results.Read full review
This is the "Bible" of cognitive therapy, widely used by psychologists. Not every chapter may pertain to you, so skip it. Also, you do not need to do every chart/activity the author describes. The book does help to focus your mind away from the negative thoughts that drag you down and depress you. You then realize these thoughts are more common to you than you realized, using Table 3-1 from the book.
This book about Cognitive Behavior Therapy contains a strategy for monitoring your negative thoughts and gradually eliminating it. In two weeks I've already received a good deal of comfort from it. Its well written and has lots of real life examples. I am finding a bit of sexist stuff, but I'm able to read past it as I find the book valuable overall.
