Modified for Automobile dash mount outside temperature sensor
This fit my need perfectly. I was able to modify it so that the backlight of the LCD readout could be wired to my dash lighting - powered separately from the temperature sensing/display electronics. To do this, I carefully opened the case (you need to be proficient with sensitive electronics to do this, and use clean environment techniques but it is inexpensive enough that not much of a loss if you screw up), cut the red wire from the circuit board to the LED display backing lamp and soldered the LED lamp red wire to a 33K ohm 1/8th watt resister and to a wire you supply (I had a green wire) to tie into the automobile dash lighting circuit (assuming your car is positive voltage for dash lights). I wired the original red and black wires from the thermometer to the Car Stereo Battery/Memory lead (usually Yellow) and black to ground. My new green wire I wired to the dash lights circuit (often Orange of the Car Stereo, but you need to find the right wire in your car). The temperature sensing electronics alone (without LED backlamp) draw 1.6 milli-amps. This is virtually nothing for a car battery. If you need to extend the sensing probe, just make sure you keep the white and red wires in correct polarity with the wires you use to extend it.
