My love for this soundtrack comes primarily from my love of the movie. When I first went to see Elf in theatres, I thought I was going to hate it. I liked Will Ferrell, but I wasn't sure how he could pull off being in a kids movie. So I loved the movie even more when I saw it because it completely exceeded my expectations. The film was not only very funny, but it had an upbeat lightheartedness that was contageous. The same can be said for this soundtrack. Most of the songs on the album have no doubt been on previous Christmas compilation albums, but they mix together pretty well here. The album begins with Louis Prima's "Pennies From Heaven", which isn't a Christmas song. However, it's so catchy you don't really care. What you do find out is that the lighthearted nature of the song matches very well with the following songs by Ella Fitzgerald and Lena Horne. There's no prepackaged pop music here: just some great standards. Other highlights of this album include the "Baby, It's Cold Outside" duet with Zooey Deschanel, who plays Will Ferrell's love interest in the movie, and Leon Redbone. Deschanel is featured singing this song by herself in the movie, but it comes as a surprise that she can sing equally as well with an established musician such as Redbone. Brian Setzer's "Nutcracker Suite", originally featured on his 2002 release "Boogie Woogie Christmas" also fits very well on the soundtrack. You can just imagine Ferrell wandering around modern day New York City as this fitting music plays. Besides Louis Prima's introduction, Billy Preston's classic song "Nothing From Nothing" is also not a Christmas song, but you find from listening to this album that it really doesn't need to be. It's an upbeat song about giving that fits right into the holiday spirit. This CD can easily be listened to from beginning to end, especially during the holiday season. It's worth buying because it doesn't feel as though the songs were aimlessly mashed together and shipped out. The CD feels as though it was carefully mixed together and trimmed to perfection. There's even a nice Christmas message inside the CD sleeve from the director and soundtrack producer of the movie, Jon Favreau. This CD is one you won't want to sell or use as a frisbee.Read full review
I don't know why I thought that this would have some type of special music but it doesn't......just good old Christmas music.

It is missing several songs from the movie including the title theme and the ride in santa's sleigh. It also has several songs that aren't even in the movie. Santa clause is coming to town is sung by eddie arnold instead of zooey. Lame!
