I have an 'old' G4 Mac in which I still use in order to print my photos because I use "QuarkXpress" to incorporate scripture on them. I have always used the Epson Stylus Photo 1280 printers, but they are no longer manufactured. I have purchased a few 'used' ones off of Ebay. My last one started having some problems so I decided to find another one. I was happy to see a "new" never been used Epson 1280 being sold on Ebay. After a few adjustments to 'memory' it is printing beautifully! Very happy here in Baltimore!

These are very good printers, reasonably easy to repair, with parts available and necessary repair software available on the net. I purchased two of them, and was happy with the resulting products. Generally only strong print head cleaning techniques are required. (Including removing the head for separate attention.) An exception has been the replacement of driver transistors. I think this printer model was one of the best wide carriage printers that Epson ever produced and used ones are available at reasonable prices on Ebay. You must be willing to repair them however. The maintence manuals are available on the net, and are absolutely necessary. Ink refill kits are readily available, as well as continuous flow systems. In short I highly recommend them, especially for photographers.
This is the third Epson 1280 I have owned. I still have all three I just use them in different places. It is an excellent printer. My main use for mine is to print high quality photographs to sell to people. This printer is amazing. While some printers seem to lay ink on top of the paper, (you can turn the print under a bright light and see where the ink is)the Epson 1280 print looks and feels like a regular photographic print. I have used my prints in albums, hung them on walls and they are incredible. The printer is easy to use. And I love how you can print up to 13X19 prints and panoramics too. I.ve tried other printers and this one never, ever dissapoints me.
Like the Epson 1520 the Epson 1280 printer gets a bad rap sometimes because its an older design but especially because it lacks many of the features of the new Epson models. But because this printer is so low tech its actually way more reliable than the new Epsons. This printer can produce beautiful prints without all the hassle of the whistles lights and bells that always seem to break after a year. Ink for this printer model is also inexpensive. Although OEM Epson inks can run $30 to $35 for this model we stock Epson compatible inks for $3.30 to $6.30 each. We have experience with over 100 owners of Epson 1280 printers, actual customers of ours whom have been buying our 1520 inks. Even under commercial use, the Epson 1280 printer lasts for years. 2 years is average for this model but unfortunately we cant report any customers with a 1280 in use for anymore than that. Maintenance for this printer model is simple. Under commercial use, we recommend turning off the printer every evening. This helps protect the print heads from drying out and also makes sure to prime the heads before printing the next day when you turn it back on. If you are paying some sort of fee for the prints you make, like many of our customers, we recommend also making a test print every morning. This will make sure the printer is totally operation before you blow your hard earned money on a bad print. Additionally, this printer will require print head cleaning at times. We recommend the following sequence to properly clean the heads on this printer. First, always make sure you have plenty of ink in your cartridges. If they haven t been replaced recently replace them first regardless of what ink quantity you believe to have inside. Place the new cartridges in the printer and allow it to prime. Then run a series of THREE seperate head cleaning cycles on the printer. Then its important to stop and run one single print nozzle check to make sure that the printer is working properly. Doing anymore tha three seperate print head cleaning in a row can hurt your printer because it can overhead the print heads. If this series of three head cleaning and one nozzle check doesnt help make your printer work right again you may repeat this process. Even try making a photo print sometime in between, dont rely only on the nozzle check print as sometimes even a less than perfect print nozzle can produce photos that are to your satisfaction. If after repeating this process lets say three times give your printer a rest overnight. Then try some more in the morning. If things still dont work pick up a bottle of print head cleaning solution. This is a liquid that you basically inject into the print heads to help clean them. Because this can ruin your printer if not done properly, we recommend this basically as a last resort. Sometime soon we will also begin to market this solution. Contact us for details. Thank you Clearanced.com, Inc USERID clearanced.comRead full review
