Superb social satire, a thrusting attack on the smug French middle class - or a pseudo-intellectual rant? The viewer must choose, and the choice will depend on a state of mind rather than on the film itself. It is a first-class example of what it is and the viewer must expect to be occasionally puzzled, as one generally is by Bunuel's films. Interestingly, this cult film has stood the test of time much better than many of its contemporaries. It does have a timeless quality as the issues it raises - drugs, South American governments, the role of the military - continue to be relevant issues today. Definitely not a film for someone who doesn't know or want to know more about the French view of the world.
For someone like me, this movie requires attentive repeated viewing to appreciate it. I watched this after viewing Babette's Feast for the first time. And the latter movie has now become a favorite movie to watch during the holidays along with Godfather.

Great Buñuel movie, surreal story, love it. Three couples in there own owrld even when crazy things happen around them, very cold thinking. Strong critic to the Bourgeoisie, ironic title. This is just a great movie that a true movie lover should watch.
