I'm giving this pedal, the Digitech Hot Rod Distortion, 5 stars in relation to it's price. It's not going to compete with the $200 pedals, and has a bit of digital sound, but then again here is what it has going for it. I own 4 Digitech pedals and all have been great, home or live with a band. The Hot Rod has a morph knob (like the Tone Driver, another great buy) which is suppose to give you tones of a Pro Co Rat, a Boss DS-1 and a Fuzz Face. All 3 come pretty close in their own way, so you can save $$$ and get 3 pedals in one. I like the Rat tone (thick heavy mids with gain all the way) and the Fuzz Face setting (super saturated, nice sustain). The tone knob works well and can really change the character of each "morph." The DS-1 setting sounds like, well....DS-1. Not a fan of this distortion, but I suppose it has it's place. Seriously, when in a live situation, no one in the crowd is going to know that you're using a cheap pedal to get a great tone. I feel all the little differences from the expensive pedals are lost in the mix when it comes to overdrive and distortion. As long as it's pretty close and you tweak the pedal for good tone. The Tone Driver works the same way....even our other guitarist bought one! lolRead full review
Digitech's Hot Rod Distortion is one of those pedals that's everybody wants but no one wants to admit having -- it's uncool, it's 'economical,' it's mass-produced, but it's also incredibly useful, built like a tank, and (shhh, don't tell anyone) it sounds great! From Rat to DS1 to ToneBender and all points in between, it "does" more dirt pedals than you'll ever need. So pick up a deal. And hide it under your pedalboard if you need to keep your reputation intact.

First off the only con I can think of is it eats batteries up somewhat faster than an average pedal. If your running off a power supply that won't matter. I got this by accident found it cheap locally. At the price it was it was worth buy and try. It can get very close approximations of a fuzz face or big muff, proco rat, ds-1 (in my opinion this sounds better). You can adjust and come up with a distortion tailored to your liking. This can be a great replacement on a board for someone who needs different distortions in a portable 1 pedal package. 1 pedal many great distortion tones at a great price even at retail its worth the buy.
