I own a 5800 w/Aktis remote/base - Denon 2900 CD/SACD/DVD deck. I bought the 5800 in 2000, upgraded to the 5803 video and crossover software in 2003... and with Denon’s forward thinking prowess... a pair of 8 channel analog inputs were included with plenty of component inputs. While not a lot of BluRay players have 8ch analog outputs, some excellent ones do. Including the 2900. Both 7.1 (8ch) and gold plated stereo separate outputs. Why’s this important? It pre-dates HDMI. This allows you to use with component/analog equipped decks OR use the 5801.5 ;) as a seven channel, 200 watts per channel amplifier. Or, preamplifier as it’s also got 8 channel output for external amps. My mains go to a McIntosh channel and the other channels are powered internally by the reason I started the review. This is a near 100 pound/44 kilo AVR, with what looks to be a 40 pound cap/transformer dead center. I’ve NEVER had an issue, I’ll never sell it (paid over $4k w/upgrade lol, it’s worth 10 cents on the buck now). Compared with today’s ‘high end/top shelf’ AVRs, @ 30-maybe 40 pounds, physics is still a rule unbroken by power to speaker, real wattage - not @ 1KHz all channels. Give me 20Hz-20kHz or separates (pre-amps/external amps). There’s an excellent reason amplifiers aren’t light like a $2500 receiver from your local box store. The 5800/03 (w/Atkis, yes it’s spelled correctly and base station in working shape) is possibly one of the great bargains in used audio. I also use the Cary Audio 98 pre-amp and SS/Tube CD 300 with a Rega P25 and Pioneer TX9500 tuner - and you’d never know HDMI doesn’t exist, nor does an intelligent “TV” in my system;)Read full review
