From a photo-editing P-O-V to/of which IPS screens are primarily targeted/coveted & which hardware calibration is somewhat expected. It is missing some controls an enthusiast that bothers to get calibration hardware for might hope to have. I guess that's why they introduce it as an "e"-IPS screen, with presumably the "e" denoting "economy"-IPS. Although it is (as-of-this-writing) the only 22" IPS type screen available & @ quite a bit less than the nearest 24" IPS screen, especially if you can get it with CashBack or via coupon code discount & maybe also cheaper than smaller IPS screens as well. And it just may sway some gamers away from the generally more speedy but much less expensive TN grade panels that aren't suited to Photo & graphics uses but do games & movies very well even though they pretty much have to be viewed straight-on to avoid color/contrast shifts. This monitor is also short on connectivity compared to many screens regardless of screen type, if that might be important. It's basically limited to one-each VGA & DVI & 4 USB ports albeit comes with each cord for those connections & there's no HDMI, which is rapidly becoming a "standard". My 3 or 4 year old comparable PVA screen of another brand has S-video as well as a couple sets of RCA video & audio plugs as well as stereo speakers that are missing on this 2209. I have no issue with the lack of speakers or connectivity options but more precise control for visual adj. surely would be welcome & I wouldn't think at too much extra cost, considering all those missing connections that surely reduce manufacturing cost. however, do enough forum searching & I find there are ways to circumvent this control shortcoming & it does have more than just brightness & contrast controls. I also knew this going in but it has been difficult to get it to show many of the test patterns online for testing screens for photo/graphic capability, as well as I thought it would. Luckily, I have managed to get it to look very good, even without hardware calibration although I've not tried printing yet to verify if it's tuned well enough for photos. For most, not so photo-editing inclined, it's probably great right-out-of-the-box for games, movies & surfing the net but it's way too bright @ default, especially in lower ambient light viewing environments. in a normal-lit office/room it should be fine from the get-go or just using the presets & probably won't need to be specifically fine-tuned. Viewing angles are great & surprisingly it has added a bit more real estate than I expected over my previous 21". I really didn't think it would be as noticeable as it seems. It's built very well. with no loose or squeaky attributes some screens exhibit. It snaps into the stand effortlessly, swivels well, with a firm footprint, should tilt forward a few more degrees but tilts plenty backwards & it pivots to portrait aspect easy enough. No hot-pixels or other possible anomalies have reared ttheir ugly heads. In closing, after only a day tuning it by-eye, even without hangin' the puck on, it hasn't disappointed, for the just-over $200 it cost. If I get it even better after jumpin' through the hoops hangin' the puck on it & tuning it more finely. I may even be so kind as to update this review rating up from 4 to 4 & a half stars, since the max five would require more connectivity that it lacks. As it happened, I still think I got a good deal but I was worried once or twice in the tuning stage overnight. YMMVRead full review
The Dell 2209WA 22 inch Monitor sports an IPS panel rather than the typical consumer TN panels, but at a consumer price. IPS panels support a wider color gamut and are much brighter than TN panels making them ideal for professional graphics use. The Dell 2209WA 22 inch Monitor is a professional level monitor available at a consumer price. There are not a great deal of image controls on the monitor to help reduce the price, but in a graphics application you are going to calibrate the monitor anyway. Upon receiving my monitor, I let it warm up for an hour and then performed a calibration using a Spyder calibrator. There was barely an adjustment required. The before and after calibration images were almost identical. Very impressive! Both shadow and highlight detail are clean and accurate. THe monitor is VERY sharp. No softness noticed in either images or text. Height, tilt and pivot adjustments are smooth simple one hand adjustments. The ability to rotate to a vertical orientation is great for vertical images! (NOTE: Your video card software must be compatible with rotating monitor to make use of the ability) The 22" size is ideal for a dual display graphics setup. The straight sides and narrow bezels make dual display a breeze. I have Lightroom or Photoshop displayed on one monitor and the image to be edited on the other monitor. This greatly speeds up workflow by reducing the need to zoom in/out as frequently. A great low cost monitor for graphics pros. Ideal for those that prefer dual displays. An affordable higher end monitor for consumer or gaming use. All in all a great monitor for any use.Read full review
Pros: The colors are BRIGHT & VIVID. Images are SHARP. Video playback is Great. The 22" viewing area is a BIG upgrade from a 17" Flat Panel Display. We use a photo rotation as the screen saver and since replacing the old monitor with the Dell 2209WA we have already had several people comment on the "stunning quality" and "amazing colors" of this monitor. We don't use this computer for gaming, so I can't offer any experience or opinion for this monitor that use. The monitor's controls are easily accessed on the front, but do not distract from the sleek looks of the trim frame or "bezel". Cons: The only real drawback I have found with this monitor is omission of the height adjustment I had with my old Dell monitor, but it does tilt up & down and left & right to some degree. Additional: I have had the monitor for about 2 weeks now and have not used it in it's vertical orientation yet, but at some point I will have to "try it out." This monitor is used for general computing, online, and for watching movie & video. We added the compatible Dell AX510 sound bar to this monitor to save space & keep with the minimal appearance of this computer's set up because it is in a highly visible area (kitchen desk). Bottom line: I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THIS PURCHASE & WOULD NOT HESITATE TO RECOMMEND THE DELL 2209WA TO ANYONE LOOKING FOR A QUALITY 22" MONITOR FOR GENERAL USES.Read full review
A very nice design and great quality. Although it came with an excellent swivel and height adjustable base, I chose to mount it on a wall mount which attached perfectly. Color rendition is excellent and I am very happy with this monitor for general use, as well as graphics and image editing. At the price point, it would be hard to beat, while performing like some of the more expensive monitors out there today. While I haven't color calibrated it yet, I have to say that moving from a LaCie CRT, the out of the box default settings and choices are not too bad. Very happy with my purchase!
Considering I got this at just above half price, this is an incredible deal. This has eIPS technology, enabling amazing color reproduction and ridiculously good viewing angles compared to the average TN panel, making the portrait mode a viable option rather than the mediocre experience it is on most screens. It isn't full HD resolution, but still acceptably high for a 22 inch, and I prioritized the panel quality over the pixel count. I could have got a cheap 1080p 24 inch for about $200 or less, but it would look like crap compared to this. It's solidly built, looks sharp, and has smooth adjustments in tilt, pivot, rotate, and height - everything you could want.
