*** THIS REVIEW DOES CONTAIN SOME SPOILERS ABOUT THE MOVIE -- BUT DOES NOT CONTAIN ANY INFORMATION TO SPOIL THE ENDING *** The movie Deception introduces viewers to shy accountant Jonathan McQuarry (Ewan McGregor) whose lonely life consists mainly of traveling from one large company to another, conducting audits. When charming and sophisticated attorney Wyatt Boze (Hugh Jackman) takes an interest in him, Jonathan is eager to step into his new friend's exciting, fast-paced lifestyle. When a mix-up leaves Jonathan with Wyatt's cell phone, he learns that his new friend is also a member of an elite club where high-powered executives meet in local hotels for anonymous sex. Given the opportunity, Jonathan joins in with enthusiasm, but the fun quickly ends when a beautiful young woman he has met (played by Michelle Williams) mysteriously disappears and Jonathan learns the true reason for Wyatt's interest in him. The viewer is given several clues early on as to Wyatt's true nature, however, the movie still works because we also see that the friendless and naive Jonathan is being completely taken in by the debonair but deceptive Wyatt, and we continue to watch to see what will happen next. The second half of this film turns into a thriller as Jonathan faces life and death decisions. This part of the movie actually reminded me of "Swordfish" (another Jackman film). In Swordfish, Jackman is a "good guy" who is forced to use his computer skills to transfer money to a foreign bank for the "bad guy". In Deception, this plot is used again, with Jackman playing the bad guy. Although a bit predictable, overall, this is a good movie. Both Jackman and McGregor play their roles well. Ewan McGregor is likeable and you will easily find yourself sympathizing with him. I have to admit that I thought it would be difficult for me to find Hugh Jackman believable as a villain, but he was completely convincing as a man without conscience, a cold-blooded killer ready to do anything to get what he wanted. This movie is rated "R" and contains profanity, nudity, and sexual content. Personally, I wouldn't pay full retail price for the movie, but I got a great deal on Ebay, so it was worth it to me. My DVD contained an alternate ending which I also enjoyed. I have rated it as 4 stars out of 5. I hope you find my review helpful.Read full review
Features actors: Michelle Williams, Hugh Jackman, Ewan McGregor. Jonathan McQuarry works long hours, who suddenly one night sees his life passing him by.When an attorney named Wyatt sees him and stops by to say hello, the two hit it off and instantly become friends.Soon Jonathan sees there is more to Wyatt than meets the eye with his phone calls and pretty women. While taking lunch in the park they accidently switch cell phones and Wyatt is has already left out of town for 2 weeks.Jonathan hears the words "are you free tonight" from a woman on Wyatt's cell phone and decides to meet up with her.Soon he becomes introducted to the sex club with 3 rules, no names, no business talk & the initiator pays for the room.Like the old saying goes some things are too good to be true, when Jonathan gets tangles in lies, murder and being threatened, with the woman he can't stop thinking of.The fate of the woman is in Jonathan's hands.DVD has special features.Movie does have some profanity and nudity, the end of the movie is more like a thriller not knowing what's going to happen next.Would reccomend to rent.Hope this helps you decide, please click YES at the bottom.Thank you for taking the time to read this! :)Read full review
Hugh Jackman was one of the producers of this film. It was well made and well thought out. The theme of the film was somewhat very adult and risque, however, the film leads us to points where we are not actually expecting we are going to go. This lends itself to a very surprising and suspenseful film, unlike firewall where we have black-mail involved as well. Ewan Mcgregor was wonderful in this role and I will highly recommend this film to anyone wishing to get a full blown surprise from Mr. Nice guy. I'll give this film a 5/5 for mystery, suspense, and intrigue. IF YOU LIKE MY REVIEWS, PLEASE DON'T HESITATE TO LET ME KNOW BY VOTING. THANKS.
