Great Film! This is one film that shows there is no "glory" in war. There is only suffering, torment and death. Ds Boot is an accurate depiction of life on a U-boat crafted by Germans.

For pacifist or patriots alike, for those who defended our freedom, or those who have no clue of war, this movie is an eye opener. For those who cannot stand confined spaces, or are afraid to live in less than a cubicle, for those who think they have lived in stress, think of all the options at your disposal. For once you have made the choice, get into a sardine can, you learn extremely quickly that doing or giving 115% of yourself, is more than expected. You learn to lean & count on others, as well as have others count on you, do something that you believe in, no matter the circumstances. For those who have no idea of submarine life, under primitive, stressful conditions, uncertain about the tomorrow, unable to see open spaces for days at a time, this is a good lesson. You do see, feel & get to expereince everyone's pain and life under water. Very thirlling, exciting, emotional movie, for most people & most ages, something to make people talk for a long time.Read full review

It can be argued that throughout cinema history, war movies have universally been told from the Allied side, somewhat propagandising their side of the conflict. No suprise then, that I jumped at the chance to watch a movie that was the complete opposite. Das Boot tells the story of a German U-Boat on patrol in the Atlantic during 1941. In amongst the tension, drama and suspense that are the norm in submarine movies, Das Boot aims to tell the viewer its story of just how horrid it was to serve on one in that era. By far the most appealing element of this movie is the sheer perfection of the acting. Every detail of the characters has been played out wonderfully, with highlight performances from Jurgen Prochnow, Klaus Wennemann and Herbert Gronemeyer. The original uncut version was so long, that it had to be segmented into a TV mini-series. The Directors Cut narrows it down to a more reasonable (!) 3 hours, which may seem daunting at first, but the film is just so engrossing, those three hours seem like nothing atall. The DVD version allows for the original German audio track with English subtitles also, whereas the VHS has the English dubbing. This film, to really enjoy it, needs to be watched in its original audio, to capture the brilliance of the acting. Although Das Boot may seem daunting, providing a fresh perspective on an age-old film genre, it really does deserve the title "Best war movie ever made" as so many people say. If you havent seen it yet, watch it. If you have, go watch it again.Read full review
