My old car's roof was rusted and a paint job costs more than the value of the car. I needed to inhibit further rust just to make the car last a couple more years. I have zero auto savvy and when I asked a clerk at a body shop, she told me there are products to provide a protective coating. I did my homework on line, learned about Corroseal and took a chance. My black car now has a black roof instead of orange so I'm pleased. The hood of the car has several spots (less than dime-sized) where the paint had chipped so I also applied Corroseal over those. Since there was no rust on those spots, there was no color change. The only negative criticism is that brush strokes are visible. If I had had a sprayer that could handle the thick white Corroseal, I could have done a proper job but I'm a 74-year old female with no tools. Even so, I achieved what I wanted so I recommend Corroseal. Read full review

It works on surface rust that can be easily treated or removed by light sanding or even a soak in vinegar. But on deeply rusted and pitted metal it makes matter worse. It traps rust under a layer of hard plastic coat and it is only a matter of time before the rust breaks out again to the surface after it has done a lot of deep unrecoverable damage to the core of the metal. If you are looking for a temporary beauty coat that is skin deep this will work for few weeks, but it is definitely not a preventative rust agent or a permanent solution to restore rusted metal. Rust is like cancer they only remedy is removing the infected part.

Used Corroseal rust converter on some tools with old dry oils, outdoor iron pipe and car frame. Did not do any cleaning on any of the items, just painted it on. Turns black in 20 minutes and you can blob it on thick or thin for just one coat. See the Youtube video "How to paint rusty metal" by hoohoohoblin and his one year follow up. It's true and works just as shown.

A rusty frame repaint is one of the dirtiest jobs you can do, so wear good face and breathing hardware when you crawl under and do the grinding and brushing. Use your pressure washer to blast it afterwards. I've tried a few rust converters and this one actually works. I hand brushed on two coats and I waited a week between them. Wear gloves! True to a few guys comments online, a good enamel black paint covering over this, requiring two more coats, made my frame look quite nice. Should last a while in upcoming road salt attacks.
