I bought my iP8500 on eBay as a replacement for an Epson Photo 870. I use the printer primarily for color photo and graphic printing (I have a laser printer for routine text printing). While I felt the Epson had darn good print quality, it had one serious flaw: if you let it sit idle for a week or two, the nozzles would clog and require cleaning. Sometimes it would take several tries to get it going again, and this blew through ink in a big way. After doing some research, I decided to try the Canon. Wow, was I wrong about the Epson! The print quality of the iP8500 blows it away. Its contrast range and color gamut are incredible. It's also speedy and quiet. Best of all, it can sit idle for a week or two and start right up with a perfect print. If photo print quality is your top issue, the iP8500 is an outstanding choice.Read full review
I owned this printer before this particular item came up on eBay but as it was used heavily - it eventually needed some repairs that I didn't want to make so I purchased this very slightly used printer on eBay to replace the one I had & liked so much. Prior to this item coming up on eBay & knowing I would have to replace my dying printer, I purchased another Canon printer on eBay (an even more expensive model) that ended up with fewer features than what I already had. I don't regret the sale of the 1st replacement as it has the capacity to print larger sheets of paper, therefore, it has filled a gap in my printing capabilities & I am glad that I purchased it as well. BUT, it is also nice to have an old friend back that I had with the Canon iP8500 printer originally. I like Canon printers - I have never been displeased with their capabilities. I replaced the original iP8500 with the Canon PRO9000 Mark II. They both use 8 separate ink cartridges including both red & green which helps in color separation. It is nice to have both & I am glad that I found a replacement for the original iP8500 because I would have purchased it again even if it had not been discontinued by the manufacturer - Canon & I did.GooRead full review
Printers tend to be unwieldy. I generally expect mandatory annoyances, errors, mysteries, and lots of wasted paper and wasted ink when it comes to printing. However, Canon really threw me for a loop with their recent high-quality photo printers. I've had one other model besides the pixma ip8500, and both of them have actually been MUCH easier to work with and much less prone to mayhem than the cheap inkjets and deskjets of the past. The pixma ip8500 in particular has been a wonderful addition to my digital world. It's easy to set up and very well-supported. The ink cartridges can be a pain to find, and of course they're rather expensive, but these are things you'll run across with any printing endeavor. In the end, it definitely seems worth it when I'm printing out hi-res photographs that finish in a matter of seconds, and the picture quality easily matches that of professional printing services I've paid for in the past. I like the design of this printer - it folds up and expands in very convenient ways, and it moves around easily. The lighted indicators on the front of the printer are actually simple to understand, as opposed to the bizarre morse code style messages of my former printers. The few paper jams I've encountered were easy to fix, and surprisingly, I found all the help I ever needed right where it was supposed to be, in the product documentation. The ink cartridges are easy to change, and lock in place quickly and securely. The quality of the prints is always stunning. Whether you're printing an artsy photoshop piece with subtle blurring and texture, or high-res promotional images from your favorite show, or even low-light images with many variations on a certain tone - the true impact of the original image is always reflected beautifully in prints from the pixma ip8500. I'm not a professional and I can't speak for this printer's relative performance when compared to other models, but I'm certainly a very satisfied customer.Read full review
One thin that is great about this printer is the ink cartridges, No Chip so refilling is a great cost saver plus the prints are as good as my Canon Pro-100 but cheaper - Ink

I have used the Canon printers including the i960, the pixma i6000, the i9900 as well as this iP8500 and all of them do a superb job. I print lots of photos and find the very inexpensive compatible ink cartridges to work well. I think any of these models would cause even a very discriminating user to be happy
