Good versitile pocket camera with all the bells and whistles
Going on vacation and did not want to carry heavy DSLR camera outfit so bought this. After using it for a week or so I it is up to the task. Lightweight, full of features, nice all around point and shoot camera. As far as being a point and shoot pocket camera all its features are easy to use, especially the video option, easier than my DSLR cameras. One concern I had was was the image size. My latest DSLR is a 24 mpix which when I am using it for parties and just family pictures produces a large image, even to manipulate even in PhotoShop. The 12.1 mpix is more than sufficient for what I need on a vacation. Just a comment for those who may have vision issues as I do, I am so used to using a viewfinder that using the display to frame the picture takes some practice, as it would with ... Small camera, big value
An old design, I bought this one as a backup for my 10 year old S8100 that is showing its age. Great pocket camera for snapshots, Facebook, and Ebay. 10:1 zoom is plenty of telephoto, macro setting for great closeups, and plenty of resolution for online posting. Compact cameras cannot compete with SLRs for ultimate image quality but neither can most monitors display really high resolution. Great depth of field for product shots. I sell and trade vintage cameras, the S8100 is perfect. Also has usable 720p video that my grandsons enjoy. Surprisingly tough for a pocket camera, more rugged than the model that replaced it. I've been waiting since late summer for the Canon 4500 and the Nikon s8100 to be released. The Canon came out first, about three weeks ago, and I immediately bought one.I played with it for a week and decided it just didn't live up to my expectations (in auto mode: flash too bright and uncontrolable, images NOT razor sharp, 36mm lens too narrow). I returned the Canon 4500 and ordered the Nikon s8100 last week. What a difference! If picture quality is your main concern (which is, of course, every photographers main concern) this little baby really shines. In auto mode, images are razor sharp and super bright with or without flash and throughout the full range of the zoom. I don't know if it's the Nikor lense or the auto focus system but these pictures are superior to any point and shoot ... The Cannons image quality was similar to a lesser priced digital point and shoot. The Nikon is a full step above this. There are a few small negatives: the worst being the rediculous placement of the pop-up flash. Each time I've attempted to take my first flash picture of the day my finger has been over the flash which prevents it from fully opening. At least a note comes on the monitor which tells you that the flash is not fully up. Once the flash is up it stays up until you manually push it down, so it's not like this problem occurs every time you take a flash photo. I'm sure I'll find a different way to hold the camera to avoid this annoying problem...but it's certainly not a deal breaker. This camera does not have as many manual controls as the Canon 4500 but if I want to get super creative I'll use my SLR. It's also a tad thicker than I'd like (about the size of a cigarette pack) but can still fit in your pocket. However, both the lens and the monitor are not recessed or protected in any way and scratches will be hard to avoid. I'm using a soft suede pouch when it's in my pocket to protect it. Overall, I'm very happy with the Nikon s8100 and highly reccomend it for anyone looking for super high quality photos in an easy to use reasonably priced camera. UPDATE: Took camera out for first extended shoot on Halloween night. Did not perform as well as I'd hoped for. All pix shot in low lite (outdoors, night) in auto mode with flash. Flash way too bright to the point where some pix were washed out with too much lite. Will try previous commenters suggestion of playing with the limited manual controls to attempt to correct this problem. Images NOT as sharp as day time shots without flash.Will update again very soon as I'm taking out the camera again today for day AND night shots.

Just the right size.
A first class pocket or purse camera. Takes excellent pictures. The zoom feature is great and easy to use. An excellent choice for a pocket camera.

The camera is simply amazing, it's just perfect, and the problems strangely are also the reasons why it's perfect. Let me explain, as of this review most cameras now a days are offering up to 14.1megapixels in there camera. This happens to be 12mp, and that's fine. 12,000 pixels is more than enough for let's say portrait shots or just playing around. It's not going to be used to take a picture of vast open landscape. (even if I am). Secondly not many cameras vs. camcorders can claim to record in 1080i or 1080p. Well it does, and it's really sharp with both left and right mic recorders. Thirdly, all of the extras included with my ebay purchase well exceeds my high bidding price. For roughly $269 I got the complete package, which at stores range from $299, and maybe less on not so ... The camera is simply amazing, it's just perfect, and the problems strangely are also the reasons why it's perfect. A memory card wallet, for when I'll need more sd cards. the Camera case maybe $5 to $15. (the case may not have been designed for this camera, but it is funny to see the contours of the camera) 3 screen protectors, $20 instores. (but pennies on ebay) A cleaning kit, $10. My favorite is an external Flash that sychros with the Flash on the camera, just so well needed and fun and easy to use ($20 but worth up to $100)... Anyway my review is more about what I got in my auction, is this review about the camera? Haha look at me writing all all about this. Anyway about the camera. Sure there are cameras currently out there that might have more pixel power, more focal power, etc. etc. What I can imagine is that just as my father in the 80's and earily, had his Nikon's and his Canon's from back in the day, with film, but with with such great lenses and such great everything. This camera is one of those cameras that will will stick out of the others.
