Positives: Many wonderful, powerful songs, three uptempo tunes Negatives: Only 3 upbeat songs...the midtempo sound really drags out through the album in well over half of it After a short hiatus from giving birth to a son, Nichole Nordeman is back. This time with a simple, yet sophisticated title, "Brave". The amount of midtempo selections is too high though. The real standout tracks to me are the most diverse. BRAVE The album opens with a more uptempo selection, the first radio single and title track for the album. I really like this song because of the nice, new sound. You can tell this will be a good CD from the start. WHAT IF This song has some very powerful lyrics hidden behind a more midtempo style of music. As the 2nd single from the album, this is the one that persuaded me to get it. The song is definitely a standout! SOMEDAY A nice intro leads into a somewhat boring song. The lyrics and music tire after a while and seem too "draggy". The chorus is my favorite part of the song, however, carrying that nice melody. REAL TO ME One of my favorites, this one really stands out from the rest. It is more upbeat than "Brave", yet still keeps the rock feel of the album. I wish there were more of these on here! CRIMSON Another brave attempt...putting words to a classic piece of music, Chopin's "Prelude in E Minor." I personally think Nichole did a great job on it. I really the minute-long outro, however I wish the song lasted longer than barely reaching the 2-minute point. HOLD ON Here is a favorite of mine. I would love to see someone do ballet to this powerful ballad. The words remind me of an invitation at the end of a church service. While the lyrics aren't very sophisticated, they still work. However, I do wish the chorus ws a little more climactic. LAY IT DOWN Yet another song based on the Prodigal Son parable. This song really just plainly retells the story in Nichole's own words. On top of the "odd" lyrics, this is yet another midtempo selection. NO MORE CHAINS Another overused metaphor...chains. It seems like this song was just stuck in here as a filler. It is midtempo (again). GOTTA SERVE SOMEBODY This is the song most worthy of the album's title. Nordeman really took a BRAVE attempt to cover one of rock's most famous legends...Bob Dylan. I really love the unique pop, techno style of this. It is really different from anything I have ever heard Nichole do. Though many people don't really like the remake, it remains my favorite song on the album. LIVE Blah...blah...blah...midtempo...blah...blah...blah... WE BUILD Nichole's love song is very heart-wrenching. Coming from Nichole's personal struggle with relationships, this song talks about how it will slowly "build" back up. A really sweet marriage ballad. Nichole has a beautiful voice, and the lyrics to her songs are real, honest and are about real life. I've seen her at a conference, and she's like that in real life -- no pretenses, no show. I love that her songs aren't full of sappy Christian lyrics, but are just so incredibly real and encouraging, too. Great CD -- one of my all-time favorites.
This is one of my all time favorites. I highly recommend it. I gave it as gifts to my favorite people this year!
For one reason, Nichole always stands out above every other Christian singer- she seems to have the uncanny ability to place into words the feelings deep in our souls, the love and reverence we feel for God, our gratitude for His abiding mercy and grace. Brave, Someday, Hold On, and No More Chains are my favorites.
Nichole Nordeman sings with commitment and compassion that inspires me. Lifts in spirit. Renewed. Music is beautiful and I want to go out to face the world!! With my spirit in the right direction! Praise the Lord. Thank God for Nichole's willingness to share her talent with us.
