I had read that this album was comparable to Radiohead's The Bends album, both here and from a freind. This was enough to make me decide to check it out, I figured even if it was a complete clone of The Bends it'd be enjoyable and strange coming from a band who started out sounding like Sum 41 and Blink 182. This album is not at all like the Bends...Its like nothing Ive heard in a long time. Aside from some guitar tones the only thing it has in common with the Bends is that its completely new, it doesnt sound like anything you know of already. This album is full of suprises, I cant think of the last time i listened to a CD and actually flinched at an unexpected moment or change in the song (probably OK Computer). None of these songs are going where you think they are. Songs you expect to explode and rock out dont, yet manage to keep their edge. Contrasting loud and quiet parts - like screamed vocals over a soft quiet guitar, a very loudly mixed rough sounding choir of singers, scratchy guitar noise soundscapes - catch you off guard. If you were disapointed with other heavy punk emo type bands trying to do something new (Finch, Lost Prophets), you might find a pleasant suprise here. The album sounds like the last 10 years of music meshed together seemlessly without the stink of forced effort or a marketing gamble to produce a hit. The production of the album is also very unique, often you get the feeling of someone sitting in the corner of a dark empty warehouse playing their guitar. Drums, guitars and vocals are all mixed in strange ways and unorthodox volume levels that work just right and special effects that are refreshing and different. The vocals are the best part. The content seems to focus around feelings of guilt, death, loss and redemption. There are at least 2 songs that deal with the loss of a freind to drunk driving. Far more poetic than their contemporary bands, they are only surpassed by the delivery. You would swear four or five guys are taking turns singing these songs. The trademark Brand New sounds are still here, Snarling group singing, half yelling half singing, emotional mumbling Adam Duritz/Counting Crows style vocals, But new are more effects on the vocals, half conscious Thom Yorke style mutterings. There are even a few sections that sound like the more melodic sections of System of a Down's harmonies. Not one song is filler, even the ones that clock in real short are interesting intermisisons. Some sound like old Brand New, some almost sound like lost Radiohead tracks, some could almost go on The Killers album and fit in. This is the perfect album for wallowing in your teenage depression (as the band are major morissey fans this is expected), I only wish I had it back then. Worth buying.Read full review
In my opinion, this is one of brand new's worst releases to date. There are 4 songs on the cd that i would call quality songs. with deja entendu and your favorite weapon i STILL cant get enough every song on both of those CDs. the short ones from the devil and god....like "welcome to bangkok" and "untitled" are simply not brand new. brand new does NOT do instrumentals, and wtf is he mumbling in "untitled"? When i first bought the cd, and heard these songs, i thought i had a fake, and insisted on having another copy, to prove myself wrong. This cd is simply not them. its not as hard, the lyrics are not as deep, and theyve completely done away with the brutally mean analogies....eg (so have another drink.....) (i hope the next boy you kiss.....) you dont find very many deep, relatable parts to their lyrics in the new album. I love brand new because of how much i relate to the lyrics, and the quality of their music. im used to being obsessed with every song they had. If you had a chance to get a hold of the "fight off your demons" demos....these were SUPPOSED to be the new album, until people got greedy and the demos leaked. jessie, and the rest of the band became angry, and felt like all their hard work had gone to waste, because so many people had already heard their new music. they were already rushed for a release date.....so they ended up throwing a bunch of crap music together at the last minute, to get something out there, and let me tell you something. the 4 songs worth listening to that i mentioned above, all came off of the demo cd, but only those four. EVERY song on the demo cd is amazingly good. amazingly......brand new. just how they should be. For the band if you read this: fight off your demons should have been the release, not the devil and god. as a life long brand new fan, i'm disappointed. i think you should at least release an EP of the remaining tracks from the demo CD.Read full review
This is the sound of a band's evolution. Some bands can release the same kind of music for 10 or 15 years (Bad Religion, Pennywise) and still sound good. Brand New is evolving / maturing as songwriters and musicians on this record. I love the harder songs on Deja Entendu as much as anyone, but something about this cd and these songs are just beautifully haunting. It rocks in the right places and mellows out enough to make you feel. I listen to this cd about 2 or 3 times every day and I still can't get bored with it. Brilliant.
This is a style that you don't see very much anymore in my opinion. In todays music artists basically say exactly what they mean in their songs. Their songs are very easy to understand and very black and white. It is not like this with this album. The thing I love about this band is how they really make you think as to what exactly they are saying in all of their songs. Songs like "Jesus Christ" and "Milstone" use many biblical references and such that you aren't really sure what they are saying until you really think about it. That is basically why I like this album, it makes you think.
Brand New has AN AMAZING SOUND! This is one of my favorite bands. If you like Brand New, I suggest you also try Manchestra Orchestra, and another band called Citrus. Brand New was recently in Dallas at the HOB, and they give one of the best live performances I have ever seen.
