My husband bought this first book in the series in a discount store. He was intrigued by a female sailor story. Plus, it was CHEAP. With that first book, he was HOOKED! Personally, I don't read for pleasure; I'm too busy crafting. But he keeps me posted on Jacky's latest adventures, so I almost feel like I have read the books myself. Beware - there are 11 volumes in this series! I don't know if a reader could pick up a later volume not having read previous volumes. The female leading character is a quick learner and fearless. She is a former street urchin from the streets of London in about the late 1700's and early 1800's. She signs on to be a ship's boy, only one thing - she's a SHE. But as a pre-pubescent person, she is an able seaman. She learns a lot on this first ship - the Dolphin. Her "secret" isn't discovered until towards the end of this first volume. But that is just the beginning of her adventures. The advertising says it's "target audience" is teenagers, but my middle-aged retired US Navy sailor is finding it absolutely engrossing. And, in telling me Jacky's adventures, I am also engrossed. I am also a former US Navy veteran. In "my day", women in the military numbered around 10% of military populations all branches. That number is much higher now. In the time these books are set, that simply wasn't work for a proper lady. But, we have stories of lady pirates who were just as ruthless as male pirates. There is nothing about these books my husband doesn't like. He bought it first because it was intriguing and cheap.Read full review
I bought this book because I am fascinated by pirates and as a woman I like to hear about strong women. This was a fantastic book very well written that gave very factual insight to life aboard a ship and was very historical as well. The sequels are even better!
Very hard to put down. Wonderful imagination, full of excitements, and lots of near misses. You don't want them to end!!!!!
