Yet his signature quirky artistry is unmistakable, and the movie benefits from crisp production values and a loveable, bizarre cast of characters.Told through a series of vignettes, Bloom's stories involve a witch, a giant, a haunted forest, and yes, a big fish. A self-described small-town hero, Bloom explains how he left home at 18 determined to experience anything and everything life could dish out. He worked for the circus, took on daring assignments as a WWII soldier, and rambled across the country as a zany traveling salesman. Utterly unbelievable yet magical and delightful, Bloom's stories just don't translate to his son Will (Billy Crudup) who wants to know his dad's "true" life story. But little by little--through increasingly outlandish tales at which Will cannot resist smirking--the two begin to understand each other, and Bloom weaves his stories into their genealogical fabric.

I've never met anyone who hasn't enjoyed Tim Burton's Big Fish. Big Fish is an epic tale that is, like any other Tim Burton film, gloriously visual. The producing and directing are superb and the result is a fantasticly visual movie - the characters, colors, and scenes come to life and are only done justice on the big screen. Tim Burton's films are always epics and always fun to watch - from Edward Scissorhands to Beatle Juice to The Corpse Bride and Nightmare Before Christmas - and Big Fish is no different. And also like all Tim Burton movies - there is a deep message beneath the soft shell and witty dialouge. While Tim Burton is the star behind the scenes, the cast is superb and interacts wondefully with one another: Albert Finney, Alison Lohman, Billy Crudup, Danny DeVito, Ewan ... Alas, this is also my second purchase of the movie--another lent out and never returned. Mysteriously devised, wonderfully artistic, magical story of the unrealized relationship between a man and his elderly father and the stories he relayed to the younger man in his youth. Fairy tales? Hmmm... Maybe. Actuality? Who knows? by the time you get done, WHO CARES!?! Fabulous story, could watch it again and again... Just don't watch it once and give up--give it time to sink in and the story woven in will fill your mind with glistening sparks enough to edge you toward believing, and feeling DERN good about it, fantasy or not.Alas, this is also my second purchase of the movie--another lent out and never returned.
