The Bernina Artista 180 was a great deal! Threading this machine isn't difficult but you have to make sure it is done properly. You have to make sure the thread (upper and lower is seating in guides properly or you will get a thread nest under the fabric. I have practiced threading several times and I have had no trouble sewing with it. I have been wanting a Bernina for a long time. So I am so thankful to have purchased this one at an affordable price.

The machine is in bad shape. Bobbin case broken. Will take a lot of money to get working.

I bought this sewing machine because many years ago I had a Bernina 830 and wanted to go back to a Bernina but one that has more than basic sewing capabilities. The Bernina 180 I purchased on eBay is a very fine sewing machine. When it arrived, I took it out of the box and started sewing and I haven't used an electronic machine before. Although it obviously needs some fine tuning, everything I tried worked. The machine has a very nice stitch and all of the numerous features it comes with worked, except the needle threader which others have evidently also had a problem with. It is very easy to use but does require more room than my other mechanical machine. It is also a heavy machine so it requires an adequate sewing table. I think it is another good example of the fine, quality machines produced by Bernina and probably at least as good as any other machine out there of similar capabilities. It has an extensive library of embroidery stitches, even for a machine that is primarily an embroidery machine. It runs very quietly and doesn't feel like it is pounding the needle into the fabric. I would highly recommend this machine to anyone as a quality product that does what it promises.Read full review
A wonderful product TOL 2000, still very functional and runs like an indestructible tank. I am astonished at prices new ($3200-3500 for this model when it came out, newer TOL models $12,000 - wow!). But they perform marvelously. Embroidery designer software that came with machine originally runs on Win98 (not XP or Vista or 7 apparently) although that is not a problem with an old laptop around (and the parallel port dongle). May be other workarounds, and there is software on manufacturers site for Vista/7 that allows you to transfer designs/motifs purchased or produced by other design programs. The versatility of this machine for sewing and embroidery will keep me and my daughter busy for years. The computer interface will keep my brain occupied into dotage. New thread on top and the bobbin is mandatory for good performance. Bernina is the brand to get, a course at a local store will help a lot in learning the functions and practicing. VHS tapes came with the unit originally, and you can easily burn them to DVD to watch more conveniently. Practice modules/manuals are online and the versions don't change much from generation to generation of this machine. I know the weak part of this machine is going to be the electronics board and touch screen, but I plan to treat it gently.Read full review
I tried to give a lot of detail. The site would not allow it. Great Machine. The negatives are 1) It does so much it takes a lot to learn it all, and 2) getting it serviced can require travel time. Programmable alphabet, directional sewing, 1/2 inch basting stitch, great tension control, can sew through fine silk or suede layers with interfacing
