John Rice Irwin takes baskets and basket makers in Southern Appalachia out of the pages and into life with his in depth research and stories of the history and production of the Appalachian people and their many talents. Beautifully written and illustrated this book is a must for the basket weaver interested in utilitarian baskets, their physical beauty, history and production. Thank you Mr. Irwin!

One of the best reference books on mountain / southern baskets. Well written. Very interesting. Not just techniques but the real stories of the people behind the baskets. Being that this was compiled in the later 1970s and published in the 1980s I'd wager that all of these featured people are now gone from us. Comfortable easy to hold and read soft cover. Loads of good quality b/w photos . My only regret is that is didn't keep going. I Highly recommend this book to any general appraisers or a scholars of southern / mountain arts. time-travler
