Great film about our worst fears during the cold war...nuclear conflict with the Soviet Union. Great cast and outstanding performances. This is a must see film for anyone who grew up during this period.

The first 15 minutes of the movie was interesting, but the rest of it was just crap. I spent 21 years of my life (1951 - 1972) in the USAF (Korea, Libya, Europe, and North America). Three Years of that was in NATO (Germany), on a Host Nation Base. And, I can tell you that there was a 'No Nonsense Attitude' among the professionals that I worked with! This movie sends the wrong message to the younger generation, looking for information about the 'COLD WAR'!

I had heard about this movie from a fellow US Air Force Member to had advised me to watch this movie. I am a veteran of the US Air Force who served under the US SAC (Strategic Air Command). The movie depicts the begining of the third world war with Russia. During a coups by some radical Russian troops, they manage to take over some nuclear weapons which they use to launch a nuclear strike at the heart of Russian. They do this knowing the the Soviet Defense Computers will automatically begin a strike against the US and thus begins the 3rd World War. The movie does a wonderful job of depicting how the US Bomber Pilots prep for war and the incredible stress that they are under considering the circumstances. Powers Booth plays a US B52 Pilot who's crew is given the orders to perform a nuclear bombing run in Russia. The US is bombed heavily and scrambles to get it's nuclear capable aircraft off the ground and on it's way to bomb Russian. During the attack, the president is presumed dead and the country is left to be run by the Leader of the Department of the Interior. Faced with chaos and constant pressure from a crazed general wanting to go to war, the US is faced with all out nuclear war on Russia or to stand down. The movie realy does a good job of showing true military procedures and protocall. The War Readiness if right on and you truly do get a very good understanding as to what the military does when it does it's war games and why. The actors are awesome from Rebecca De'Mornay, Powers Booth and James Earl Jones. This is a must watch if you are a military member or just want to learn more about the military.Read full review
I absolutely Love this movie!!! If you are into War movies, then I HIGHLY Recommend you see this film. It gives you the taste of what life would be like inside a U.S. Nuclear Bomber that has just left base on an emergency scramble, which most of these pilots are used too for mach test and such, but the crew finds out minutes after take off, it is the real thing!!!!! The crew gets the mission of "The Grand Tour" of the Soviet Union!!! Lots of Drama and Action here. I really enjoyed "Sum of All Fears" and "The Day After Tomorrow." If you like these kind of movies, then don't miss this film!!!!!
I remember this HBO film from years ago... It's a great film about the pressures of an "accidental" nuclear attack on the U.S. and the fight of a few to keep it from escalating further. Great performances by Powers Booth, Rebecca DeMornay, Darrin McGavin, and James Earl Jones. While short of the special effects that typify most "bomb" movies, this one makes up for it with a high-suspense level asking the most basic of questions... "How does one win a nuclear war?"
