Mickey Rourke plays Harry Angel, a low-budget, hard-boiled private eye in 1955 New York. Louis Cyphre (played by Robert DeNiro) a wealthy, mysterious eccentric hires Angel to track down singer Johnny Favorite. Favorite disappeared in 1943 leaving Cyphre with an unfulfilled contract, a contract which Cyphre wants to collect. Angel follows the leads from New York, to the country, Coney Island, and eventually New Orleans. He meets some unsavory characters such as a drug addict doctor, a straight razor wielding blues player and a beautiful fortune teller (played by Charlotte Rampling). Unfortunately, most of Favorite’s acquaintances suffer grisly deaths soon after talking to Harry. Harry meets Favorite’s daughter, a voodoo priestess (Lisa Bonet). Their relationship develops as he gets closer to solving the mystery. ANGEL HEART is an interesting hard boiled private eye movie with a twist of the supernatural. To call it a supernatural thriller would be a misnomer as the movie is quite slow at times. Interesting, but it moves with the slow, deliberate pace of an investigation. The mood of the movie is perfect. It is a hot, sweaty, beautifully shot bit of noir. There is plenty of religious symbolism and flashes that hint at the solution to come. While it ends with a great twist, the movie is one that even knowing the ending it remains entertaining with repeated viewing. It’s worth adding to your collection.Read full review
I did not know what to expect from this movie when I purchased it. I really like Robert DeNero and Russell Crow. They made a good combination even though Robert didn't appear in a lot of the scene, but for good reasons. This movie is a little on the dark side and is definitely a surprise movie. At times it seems to be not going in any direction but the further into the movie it gets it build the suspense and builds to a surprise ending that I never expected. This in itself is a good reason to watch this movie. This isn't a movie for your kids to watch but it is very much an entertaining movie for adults to watch. At times it was a little slow or hard to understand where the writers were going with it, which is why I gave it a "good" rating rather than an "excellent" one but it is definitely a movie to watch. And even thought I gave it a "good" rating rather than "excellent" I still give it a thumbs up rating!Read full review
There are different kinds of "scary." There's the disturbing, the macabre, the thriller...I find that the most terrifying trips are the ones where you have to use your own mind to fill in the unseen conclusions. In this regard, AngelHeart is one of the most under-rated films out there. It is a mystery set upon the occult. The plot twists and baits you along a path to a disturbing climax. Mickey Rourke and Robert Dinero are wonderful. The film draws you into the characters. A twisted helplessness grips the viewer. The New Orleans themes in the cinemaphotography and soundtrack set a tone of foreboding. Voodoo. You feel as foreign as the main character in a world of supernatural darkness. Satan. The ultimate antagonist. There's is nothing 'B' about this film. It's first rate, world class terror.Read full review
