I love to watch the History Channel documentaries for their ability to bring vividly and without prejudices their subjects ( The Barbarians, The Crusades, The Dark Ages, etc.) This is not Ken Burns'. This is a crude and truthful account of our reconstruction years with no compromising make up in the narrative. It dramatizes the horrors that followed the biased actions of president Andrew Johnson who helps with impunity the returning confederates in their attempts to reestablish slavery and blames his political enemies (radical republicans) of the growing violence and racism like in the New Orleans massacre. Hopefully we are not witnessing a reincarnation of Andrew Johnson.

I thought I knew a lot about the Civil War but the Aftershock was certainly an eye opener. God Bless all the people in the south that lived during that time. My heart aches for you.

This product only presents one side and is thus very slanted. It is a not history just a pinpoint view of some bad things which did happen. Example there was absoluetly no mention of James Longstreet's part in trying to solve the problems which occured in post war days of New Orleans. Not all Confederates were bad and not all newly freed Black were victums. I accuse the authors of trying to re-write history to fit todays more liberal point of view. I'm surprized The History channel would allow such a distortion of truth.
This dvd tells the story of the 2nd civil war. Lincoln frees the slaves with a piece of legislation called the Emancipation Proclomation. But the former slave holders and ex-confederate soldiers have other plans for those poor souls. So now you have the vigilante racist gangs (Klu Klux Klan lead by the first grand wizard himself Nathan Bedford Forest, etc.) burning communities, lynching men, women, and CHILDREN. Awful, awful, awful curs.
This is a great film for using in the US History classroom. My kids like it more than me talking about it...must be done in intervals of 10-12 minutes for best usage. Overall, it best describes how rough the US had it after the Civil War...our country still had a long way to go in rebuilding itself.
