What you must understand about this stellar device is that you cannot just purchase one and use it out of the box. You must have software to program it as well as a serial cable. These remotes were meant to be programmed by distributors and trained professionals. The software is mostly obtainable from URC directly if you request it through email and give them the serial number and model of your remote. You are still on your own As far as the serial cable is concerned, but can obtain one online. The software is pretty intuitive if you’ve ever programmed anything before, and even without instruction I got in there and was able to program three of these remotes for three different rooms and devices without any issue. The remote has your standard keys down on most universal remotes and it also has an LCD of more obscure commands that you can grab from the database or you can program yourself. Once programmed you will notice these remotes have a much better range than most standard remotes, especially if they have relatively fresh batteries in them. Of course as with any high-end remote, The strength comes in being able to program macros into the remote. Another feature is to be able to learn head to head from a more obscure remote in which the codes may not be in the older databases, e.g. sound bars, HDMI switches, etc. Of course, the software saves all your profiles to your computer so it is easy to do minor adjustments or add-ons and then re-upload them to the remote. Overall a great remote, but again it is not for the squeamish or those who don’t like tinkering with things. But if you want to unleash some great power this is the remote to get as long as you can obtain the software and cable.Read full review

Instructions are TERRIBLE; out of any logical order and unclear. I've don't hundreds of delicate repairs, electronic and mechanical and while the product seems ok it is USELESS with the included 'instructions. The photos seemed helpful but did not help, in the end. I read and read them entirely, then again as I worked, doing my absolute best to understand them, but my partially working remote is now a brick.

It isn't easy to get a copy of the software and learn to use it to program the remote but once you accomplish that this is the nicest remote I've ever owned. I love the position of the buttons and how it feels in hand and the macros make it very powerful. The manufacturer will not share the software, offers little support and will only refer you to an authorized dealer to program the remote for you at a fee. The main drawback is that it is dated and does not have device codes for newer components. The good nes is that it can learn codes one button at a time from another remote's infra-red transmitter.

Not one complaint. This remote would be worth the retail price, much less the price you can get it for now on eBay. Not only does this thing simplify having 6 remote controls, it can take beating! Mine has been thrown, on more than one occasion, with the batteries flying across the floor, it's even had water poured on it and it still works! (after drying over night) It has been used so much that the numbers are wearing off! I bought this one to have a back up and I will send my old one back to be refurbished. Before the MX-850, I had the predecessor which also lasted a very long time. I sent it in to be fixed because the light switch broke off (remotes at my house go through the ringer) and they replaced it with the newer model! Customer service is great with this company. My wife and mother-in-law could not operate our setup without this remote. Easily switch DVR1, DVR2, WII Game, DVD or HD Camcorder. The remote handles switching the AVR and the TV Inputs. You can program any key with macros which come in handy. Examples, turn off all equipment with the Off button, switch the TV Input, the AVR input with one button. Switch to WII game (TV Input) and mute AVR because the sound is through the TV, etc. Any sequence you catch yourself doing can be made into a macro. The key layout is the best of all the programmable remotes, in my opinion. The most used keys are all hard keys on the pad so you don't have to reach to the LCD screen buttons for normal operation. I would not use any other remote even if it was free.Read full review
I bought this unit as a backup for my current one. Copying the setup file from my pc to the remote went without a hitch. The stop button wasn't working so I opened the case and cleaned the contacts and removed the rf board which was rattling around loose. I don't use that function so it wasn't needed. Now it's working great.
