A must have mafia flick!
I love this flick! Great acting from Edward James Olmos and a true to the heart movie about a young Mexican American boy with a troubled childhood. This movies takes you back to the Zoot Suit days and the riots, where tragedy strikes a young couple, thus, changing the course of their lives forever. Santana grows up in the system in and out of Juvie and then Jail where he rules the outside from the inside. This movie outlines the inner workings of "La M" The Mexican Mafia but also gives you a glimpse of what is like to be one of these men. Not entirely monsters, but actual caring human beings who dont know how to love the right way. I love this movie and have seen it hundreds of times. Also the soundtrack is one of the awesomest records on earth!
Mexican Mafia on film
This film has many memorable lines. Including this one between father and son (Edward James Olmos) "Your mother was a beautiful woman. She made me feel proud. She was 19 years old. Raped... by sailors. After it happened, we never talked about it. Then we got married and we tried to forget. When you were born, I tried to love you. But every time I looked at you, I wondered who your real father was. I wondered which sailor's blood you carried inside of you." This is a biographic film of a chicano yout in Los Angeles who rises to power in the prison system but his power reaches out to the streets of LA.
A well made movie. A good movie for my 14 & 17 year old boys to watch as a "this is why you don't want to go to prison" movie.

Mexican Mafia History, the real deal gone hollywood.
If you have much to say it may come back to bite you in the rear. If you like this kind of movie, a book you may want to read is about one of the Mexican Maffia (Rene 'Boxer' Enriquez) rolling over is "The Black Hand" The Bloody Rise And Redemption of "Boxer" Enriquez, A Mexican Mob Killer by Chris Blatchford. Very well written and it references this movie. Any other advice would be to be safe and keep your head up on a swivel because these guys don't play.
Nostalgia
I was a kid when this came out and remembered that this was the only movie my dad ever saw in a theater. Thanks for the nostalgic memories! Great film!
