The Phenom II x6 processors are amazing, but their lack of SSE4.1 support is leaving them behind. Specifically, Ubisoft's DRM needs SSE4.1 and the Phenoms only support 4.0. You could use an SSE4.1/4.0 emulator, but then the DRM will flag you as cheating. If you have a compatible motherboard, the FX-8300 is probably the only CPU worth upgrading to. It will slot in and draw the same power, use the same cooler and be otherwise interchangeable for the Phenom II x6 1055T and similar processors, but offers several improvements. The only improvements we really care about are the faster HyperTransport link and SSE4.1 support. The faster HT link will make better use of your RAM (especially if you have DDR3 clocked faster than 1600mhz) and the SSE4.1 instructions will let you run anything with Ubisoft's ridiculous DRM. Yes, I hold a grudge and Ubisoft's DRM IS ridiculous. The games themselves don't need SSE4.1, but the DRM does. Anyway, great CPU, bolt-off/bolt-on upgrade, no need to change coolers (but do pay attention to thermal paste) and keep those old AMD systems running. They've still got a few years left in them yet :)Read full review
