This book presents 30 projects to expand your creativity. Once you learn a few basic techniques for manipulating images, and learn to look at the objects surrounding you with new eyes you will be creating your very own altered art! The author guides you through the process of making altered books; creating windows, doors and niches. How-to’s guide you in cutting and coloring pages and embellishing book covers. You will learn to use rubber stamps, polymer clay, hardware, jewelry and other found objects in new ways. Hints are given for altering tins, boxes, games, cards and even clothing. Many color photos provide oodles of inspiration. You’ll refer to this volume again and again and each time you will take away something new.
One of my favorite things in the book is the introduction. The author explains that altered art has been around for a long time, and mentions pioneering artists in the genre as well as those who did altered art before there was a word for it! Her own work dispersed throughout the intro is well conceived and executed, and displays a consistency of theme and temperament as well as a refreshing minimalism (not the norm in this genre). Those who prefer step-by-step instructions might be a tad disappointed, although the projects section is detailed enough to allow one to replicate the general techniques even if you don't have those particular materials on hand. Overall the examples shown have a breadth and depth of subject matter and technique that it is a very inspiring read. I especially liked Juliana Coles' work in the gallery, featuring her own photographs of herself dressed as a cowgirl pasted into the Western-themed pages. This book is so chock full of information, I swear it weighs more! Oh, wait -- I have the hardback. ;-) (Disclaimer: My work is featured on p. 95)Read full review
