This is the one book that anyone who has more than just a casual interest in the era of the trapper and the settling of the Oregon territory and California needs. With use of the Sources and Notes in the back of the book one can find plenty of reference material to read for years having acquired a great background derived from Utley and his book, "A Life Wild and Perilous". A+++

This is an excellent introduction to the men who are credited with "opening the West" following the Lewis and Clark expedition. It is fairly comprehensive and scholarly, with an excellent review of existing sources of information. It sometimes lacks explanatory material, however, and can be a bit challenging to follow. All of the excellent and helpful maps are presented in a single section separate from the text, so the reader must flip back and forth while reading the book if there is a desire to be oriented while reading the numerous place names. I have learned a lot by reading it and know of no better source of information on the subject. Recommended.

Bought as a gift for my Nephew but would not mind owning a copy myself.

This is an excellent book. The author gives the subject a good treatment. It gives good historical info without romanticizing the material.
