  • An old classic

This mystery by Dashiell Hammett is a classic, though one most likely not read by anyone born after 1950. That’s unfortunate, as it is written in a style which is clearly of days gone by, and that’s the real fun of it. Moreover, the description of characters as well as the dialogue again is a throwback to early 20th century writing, but again that’s what makes it interesting, much like taking a ride in a car that’s 90 years old. In other words, everything about the book transforms you in time, bringing you to a time when men were presumed to act “macho” and women were mysterious, alluring, and not a little conniving. Certainly much of what is written is no longer thought to be “politically correct,”. but that doesn’t prevent the storyline from being engrossing and entertaining. So if you’re interested in reading a classic which will transport you to another era, one without gadgetry or the internet but rather heavily character driven, pick up a copy of this seminal mystery.
