Reviews
'Wallace's book ... is a solid tribute to the presence of Rome, classical and Christian, in our civilization.' Winthrop Wetherbee, Speculum: A Journal of Medieval Studies, '... the work is a masterpiece of comparative literature in the best sense of that term. It is innovative, well researched, and clearly written, and it deepens and enriches our understanding of 'Rome' as a place, idea, and transcendent category of selfhood in medieval and early modern 'Britain.'' Synopsis
This study will appeal to students and scholars of literature, history, and culture who are interested in Rome's persistence in medieval and early modern Britain., This book explores the cultural and intellectual stakes of medieval and renaissance Britain's sense of itself as living in the shadow of Rome: a city whose name could designate the ancient, fallen, quintessentially human power that had conquered and colonized Britain, and also the alternately sanctified and demonized Roman Church. Wallace takes medieval texts in a range of languages (including Latin, medieval Welsh, Old English and Old French) and places them in conversation with early modern English and humanistic Latin texts (including works by Gildas, Bede, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Bacon, St. Augustine, Dante, Erasmus, Luther and Montaigne). 'The Ordinary', 'The Self', 'The Word', and 'The Dead' are taken as compass points by which individuals lived out their orientations to, and against, Rome, isolating important dimensions of Rome's enduring ability to shape and complicate the effort to come to terms with the nature of self and the structure of human community.

- i***w (319)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseI don't know how anyone else could have had problems with this seller. The seller helped save me a whole lot of money by not just having a used item exactly as described but also helping me by accepting my offer for a price within my budget. This was the best transaction I've had on eBay since I started purchasing from eBay in 2005. Definitely not a greedy seller and very excellent with communication, and shipped fast and safe through USPS.

- i***t (249)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseThe bow was as described for parts. Unfortunately there was damage to more than I anticipated, but that's my fault for not looking closer at the photos. A couple of parts were missing that were in the photo, but the seller offered to reimburse me the cost of the parts. Decent communication. It was packaged well and sent via FedEx so it arrived on time.Diamond Edge Max Bow Camo 16-31 in. 20-70 lbs. RH (#405486232359)
