    Relatively inexperienced variac

    Transformer seems to work as it should. Meter is too small, and has a limited span, so it can only get you into the "neiborhood" of the desired voltage. I use a VOM to set the voltage accurately. I modified mine by installing a IEC power socket for the mains input. It stores more easily without the power cord permanently sticking out the front.

    I like the variable AC instead of just a fixed AC output for the price.

    The device is a great bargain compared to the RCA variac I owned before the Camp Fire. It cost over $300. I just wish it had a built in current meter. That is the best feature for troubleshooting something like a stereo receiver drawing overcurrent with shorted components. You start at 0 vac and turn it up slow while watching the current meter. I am in process of adding a current meter so I can do this.

    Pro Variac Transformer

    I ordered this variac Transformer because I have a hobby collecting and restoring vintage and antique tube radios, and having the ability to power up a radio gradually that has been in storage for years is not only safest but also helps to revive old components rather than damage them with today’s higher residential voltages.     Works as a cheap alternative to a chemical heating mantle temperature controller!!
