When I'm in the mood for something different I read Danielle Steele. Her books have become very predictable. Everyone in her books are rich and famous. This one is a bit different. Then I found that it's one of her first books. It all happens in the 70's. I wasn't around in this decade so it really opened my eyes. I mean I have heard stories of hippie communies and their drug parties but the way she describes it was great. I had to ask all the older people at work if the things she was describing really did happen. This book is fast paced and worth the read. It is a story of a young divorced make-up artist who falls in love with a producer and he has trouble commiting to a relationship with her because of the "free love" movement. If I wrote the book I would have had her leave the jerk but she stays with him, even after she finds him in bed with another girl. In the middle she finds she is pregnant with his child, instead of being happy at the thought of bring a child into the world, he wants her to have an abortation. She refuses and he sends her away. She goes back to New York, gets a respectable job and begins a new relationship with a new man. Her new man is wonderful to her and accepts the fact that she is pregnant with another mans baby. Then, Chris, the babies father gets a job in New York and he stays with her and her daughter in their apartment. She finally convinces him that they belong together and he finally agrees to marry her. She returns to San Fransico with him and they live a pretty good life until the day before the wedding. Chris goes out on a shoot with his crew and wants to get the perfect shot. He climbs up on a crane, I think, and falls and breaks his neck. She is devastated. Now, her fellow from New York comes to visit her, he comforts her. Then the day of the funeral, she starts to have terrible pain and bleeds all over her bed. By the time they get her to the hospital she is out of it. She does have the baby but when she awakens she finds that they baby has died. Now only did she lose he boyfriend, she loses her only connection to him. She goes into a deep depression until her friends announces that she is getting married. Her friend tells her to go on vacation, that she needs to get away for awhile. She decides to take that vacation and finds out that her man friend from New York has retired and is planning a vacation also. They decide to go to Europe together. In the end she goes with the man from New York. I think she should have stayed with him when she met him but hey, I'm not the author. Overall, it was one of the better Steels books I've read. I really hope that you'll love it as much as I did. It really opened my eyes to life in the 70's.Read full review
