If you have not read the book, this is a lovely film. It covers the main plot line well, beautifully filmed and with wonderful performances from the main characters, particularly Rufus Sewell as Giles and the very affecting character of Marty. It's not a film for those who want fast-paced action. It is, as is the book, a tale of quiet people living their lives quietly, but with all the passion and heartache of their lives kept within. However, once you have read the book, the film becomes unsatisfactory. Inevitably, due to constraints of time, characters are left out and scenes shortened or erradicated. Seeing this again after finishing the book, I found it too episodic, the narrative did not flow well and some of the motivations for characters actions were left unexplained - most notably, Dr Fitzpiers' affair with the lady of the manor. However, as a summary of a fine and delicate story, beautifully filmed, it's worth a look.Read full review
Although much abridged from the Hardy novel this is still a charming and affecting version. Beautifully filmed and all actors fitting the roles well especially Emily Woof who brings a quiet vulnerability to the role of the winsome Grace.

This is a well-filmed and moving tale of sadness in the life of a country girl. She has been away to school to better herself, when she returns to the village her father steers her away from her childhood sweetheart (Giles) and into the arms of the new doctor. They marry but he has ideas above his station and falls for the widowed Lady of the Manor. Don't watch this if you are on the edge emotionally, as you will end up in a flood of tears! Its a true-to-life kind of story, set around 1880. The music is good, very apropos, and the pace is just right.
