There are many low-cost used hard drives on the market for a variety of reasons. Most often individual users upgrades to a higher capacity drive. Sometimes computer recyclers strip out hard drives in bulk and offer them. Usually these low-cost drives are also low capacity -320-500gb. Like all technology, hew hard drives are increasing in capacity while decreasing in price. A 1 TB drive can be purchased new for under $100; prices are not much higher for a 1.5TB or 2 TB drive. Solid state drives are also coming down in price. Obsolescent technology creates opportunities for savvy geeks who find uses for “outdated” hardware. Again, the question: Why bother with a low-capacity used hard drive? First, I would never rely on a used hard drive as my primary data storage medium. The possible loss of data outweighs the low purchase price. However, if you have some old IDE or SATA enclosures laying around, with either Firewire or USB connections, these can gain new utility with the addition of a hard drive. I reformatted the used drive I purchased for the older Macs G4s and G3s I am running and dedicated it to use as a backup boot drive. I don’t entrust it with a lot of data, but I have installed a bootable system that can resurrect my old machines. Since the system folders on a hard drive are generally small compared to the data folders, they can be backed up on smaller drives. At the low price of a used drive, I can create many of these dedicated back-up systems as I need - one for each type of CPU. And I recycle “obsolete” enclosures that were used for defunct disc burners but still have use, especially in a Firewire chain. One man’s junk is another’s treasure.Read full review
I was looking for a 320 GB IDE Hard Drive and found this one, & thought I had a good deal until opening it out of the packaging today and finding out it is actually 250 GB. That is not only deceiving, a buyer, by shipping out a drive with less space when actually that individual may need all 320 GB.
