This book is an excellent and entertaining study of the political and social structures of Amazonian tribes under pressure to assimilate into modern western civilization. Much of the plot revolves around documenting medicinal plants used by Amazonian tribes but this book concentrates more on the tale of collecting these plants and the characters who use them than information about the plants themselves. Dont expect detailed names and botanical info. Plotkins second book "Medicine Quest" is more in this vane and the two books compliment each other wonderfully and make for a pair of fascinating reads. Also dont be thrown by the title, Plotkin collected and documented plants with forest indian medicine men but did not train to or practice shamanism himself. Very entertaining book even for those with little interest in the subject.Read full review
This book teaches us how much we modern people do not know about Nature an the amazing properties of plants, and of the human mind to figure out how to use plants to help us heal, to have spiritual experiences. It will make you want to defend the rainforests and other natural habitats and to appreciate the value of so-called underdeveloped civilizations. It is also well written and entirely credible.
