Bought this for our homeschooled child. We'd been using other curriculum but could see that our children weren't learning their basic math facts well enough. (As a former classroom teacher, who taught math in the classroom and as a math tutor, I am thoroughly convinced that a solid grounding in the facts, memorizing them and being able to effortlessly use them is a key to success in higher level mathematics.) So, we bought this with the goal of building a better foundation in the math facts, and math in general. It is already clearly serving its purpose though we're just over 1/4 of the way through the set of 2 workbooks. We did not buy the "meeting" book nor the teacher's guide. Didn't think they were really needed. We did get the set of 2 workbooks and the flashcards sets. We've diligently done a lesson and the drill sheets that go with it daily. And used the flashcards. (Without the meeting book, it does take some work to figure out some of what they expect to be done, such as making certain graphs, but with a bit of ingenuity it can be done.) This book has a lot of drill in it. We like that. Others may not. It uses steady progress and repetition to build solid skills in math. Each lesson has an A side and a B side. At first we were doing all of every lesson. Eventually, though, we settled into doing side B only if errors were made on side A. This has motivated the children to do their best on side A, rather than being silly or rushing through it too fast. Not a fancy program. Pages are in black and white. No silly pictures on the pages. But that can be good as it minimizes distractions and keeps their focus on the lesson more. A great program. Loved by a lot of homeschoolers (such as ourselves) and by schools, too. We used Saxon math for our kids through high school. In fact, we have another curriculum we use for everything else and when we saw how well Saxon prepared our older kids for the ACT, we scrapped that curriculum's included math and started buying Saxon from the early grades for our littles. Have you ever experienced the situation, in math, where you'd learned how to do a problem, but then a couple months later, you couldn't remember how to complete that kind of problem any more? That doesn't happen with Saxon because one learns how to do a new type of problem and gets one of those problems each day for the rest of the year. You never forget what you learned while you "overlearn", which is essential for math mastery. Saxon calls it "incremental development"--and it works!

Thorough and steady. Children learn best through repetition at this age, but it has many hands on activities and a diverse scope that keep it interesting. We especially enjoy calendar and money activities - anything to do with the materials kit is fun!
