About this product

Product Information

Celebrating the birth of J.R.R. Tolkien, this centenary edition of the classic volume is illustrated with fifty specially commissioned paintings by an artist whose vision matches Tolkien's own. One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them. In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, The Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell, by chance, into the hands of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins. From his fastness in the Dark Tower of Mordor, Sauron's power spread far and wide. He gathered all the Great Rings to him, but ever he searched far and wide for the One Ring that would complete his dominion. On his eleventy-first birthday Bilbo disappeared, bequeathing to his young cousin Frodo the Ruling Ring and a perilous quest --- to journey across Middle-earth, deep into the shadow of the Dark Lord, and destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom. The Lord of the Rings tells of the great quest undertaken by Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the Wizard, Merry, Pippin, and Sam, Gimli the Dwarf, Legolas the Elf, Boromir of Gondor, and a tall, mysterious stranger called Strider.

    HUGE Book!

It is NOT a travel addition. The book is HUGE and Heavy, but illustrations are the Best and the text is reasonable size. I just couldn't imagine my 6-grader reading Mass Market paperback addition - tiny test with not a single picture; perfect for travel. This book is something to put on a shelf for years. I purchased it for my son when he finished reading Hobbit. I wish I could get exactly the same, but in three more reasonable size books, but well....

  • The Lord of the Rings , Deluxe Edition

Wonderful book....this is a book which is complete , all 3 books combined. It's large, easy to read, beautifully drawn illustrations. I had one similar years ago, but it dissappeared. I have read it a dozen times, and am thrilled to have a new book. It's the kind of book very difficult to put down. A vacation 4 the mind....wonderful !!! I highly recommend it....especially as one book, the separate ones always get mislaid. Thank you sooooo much !!!! Janine

  • LOR Illustrated Version

To begin with the story is one of the best out there if you are into Sci-Fi or Fantasy. It defines the good, the bad and in most cases the ugly. This story has a beginning, a turning point and a definate ending. The characters are described in great deal and you really get a sense of who these people are and how driven they are to complete the task/journey. I have a vast collection of modern age comics and that is why I chose the illustrated version of LOR. The artwork is breathtaking and I feel it gives you a better connection to the places and people of the story. The only thing I dislike about the book is that it is one large volumn and a little awkward to read. If I could have found them I would have tried purchasing the separate volumns instead. Don't get me wrong, I do love this ...

  • Disapointment about paper quality compared with the 3 boxed set package

I have the Silmarillion ilustrated and the hobbit ilustrated so I wanted to get the complete collection so I look for The Lord of the Rings illustrated all of them of course in hard cover. I just received the book. This is the Tolkien Centenary edition and yes I debated my self into getting this complete big book or getting the 3 boxed package from 2002. I though the matter was related to the size only and the decision of having finally a single book like it was the original desired from Tolkien himself or getting the 3 books... What I was not expecting at all was that the Centenary edition (at least the USA one from Houghton Mifflin) has only gloss paper for the Alan Lee illustrations and not for the written pages...that was a great disappointment (and disillusion) the "mate" regular ...

  • Very Pleased

Was expecting a little wear and tear.. but I was wrong. Book looks brand new even though it was advertised as used. Very pleased.
